Honestly, I don't know why any of you are celebrating this "mass desertion".

Regardless of who you're supporting (be it Aquino or Villar), can't you see it's a perfect display of Philippine politics as it is today? And you praise the defections just because it is your candidate that gains more allies? Can't you see that by doing so, you are actually acknowledging the dirty political machinery that runs a campaign (and how well-oiled it is) and that it is all that matters to win an election? Doesn't loyalty mean anything to Filipinos anymore?

But who am I kidding, right? This is basically what politics IS--- in all its "glory".

Anyway, Gibo will probably not win, and I honestly think a smart vote will be for Aquino. But what the hell? I think I'll allow myself to be an idealist for once and vote for my first choice.

Politicians leaving from one party to another signals that candidates lack commitment because they fear that they might lose their interest. It could bring harm to both parties though.

The Judiciary Development Fund (JDF) is a multi-billion-peso
fund, which is administered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,
who has sole authority to authorize and approve disbursements from the
Fund. The Judiciary Development Fund is intended principally to provide
the members and personnel of the Judiciary with an additional cost of
living allowance. Its principal beneficiaries are, therefore, the
approximately 25,000 court employees, whose JDF allowances form a
significant part of their take home pay. A smaller portion of the Fund is
to provide first and second level courts, which suffer from a severe lack of
equipment and manpower, with additional office equipment and
    facilities.
Yet, as of the end of calendar year 2002, more than P500 Million
required by law to be paid as additional cost of living allowance to the
members and personnel of the Judiciary had not been paid. The
Judiciary Development Fund was used to purchase luxury cars, worth
millions of pesos, for members and officials of the Supreme Court; the
Fund was used to purchase P5,568,630.00 worth of curtains, and
P8,125,445.00 worth of “loose furniture,” for the Supreme Court’s
    Complaint For Impeachment
    Page 3
Session Hall. More than P34 Million out of the Judiciary Development
Fund was spent for the construction of vacation homes in Baguio City for
the use of Supreme Court Justices, their families and chosen friends, at
a time when the average capital outlay for infrastructure of state colleges
and universities under the General Appropriations Act is only P1 Million

A tawdry defection EVEN by the low standards of Philippine politics, the defection this week of Albay Gov. Joey Salceda from the government coalition to the Liberal Party was particularly tawdry.
The mere act of defection is rather commonplace, of course, but it takes a special skill to carry it out with such poor taste as the governor did. Through his actions, he reminded us that indeed, betrayal can come in the form of a kiss.
Only a week ago, Mr. Salceda led some 50 administration governors to pledge their allegiance to the administration standard bearer, Gilberto Teodoro. At the caucus that Salceda organized, he and his fellow governors issued a manifesto of support saying they believed that Teodoro was the most qualified among all presidential candidates to lead the country to greater prosperity and social progress in the next six years.
In a truly ironic twist for Mr. Salceda, the group of governors that he helped organize was dubbed “Team Palabra de Honor,” in recognition of their commitment to keep their word of honor and support Teodoro all the way.
What a week can do, even to one’s word of honor. Now Mr. Salceda believes the Liberal Party candidate, Senator Benigno Aquino III, is the best qualified and has vowed to make him win in Bicol.
Mr. Salceda must have realized how embarrassing his sudden change of heart would look, and tried to rationalize his action with technocratic mumbo-jumbo about “studying the differential impacts of the varying potential outcomes of the 2010 national elections.”
He then pulled some numbers out of his hat about how an Aquino presidency would have “the highest statistical probability of triggering a significant increase in the investment rate” and how it would “instantly” raise gross domestic product by 8 percent in the first 18 months and create 642,000 jobs.
That Mr. Salceda chose to betray his comrades is his business, but his attempt to use the Filipino people to ease his conscience leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. His “statistics” and projections are about as credible as his pledge to support Teodoro.
It is tempting to say from recent events that the Albay governor has no word of honor, but this would be wrong and unkind. Perhaps it would be more charitable to say that Mr. Salcedo can keep his word—up to six days, even, when the circumstances suit him.
