The PZL Swidnik Sokol is a lot less sexy than a Blackhawk but is also a lot more affordable. The Poles make ugly planes and helicopters but whatever they build tend to be very rugged and easy to maintain. Early this year PZL Swidnik was bought by Anglo-Italian helicopter manufacturer Agusta-Westland, so it should be called the AgustaWestland W-3 Sokol.

The Defiant 300 is a prototype aircraft of the Philippines developed in cooperation with the PADC, Philippine Air Force and the PASF. The project was made possible through the Capt. Panfillo Villaruel, the man who designed the aircraft. The first prototype was completed in 1986 and had its maiden flight in 1987, which lasted a little more than an hour. The Defiant 300's fuselage was composite construction (wood and fiberglass) and was powered by a 300hp Lycoming piston engine. Landing gear was taken from the Beech T-34 and provided by the PAF. The intent of the program was to provide the PAF with a trainer and light strike aircraft similar in performance to the Tucano. The Defiant 300 was to have been followed by a larger version equipped with a turboprop engine and designated the "Defiant 500". The project languished soon after the development of the prototype because of lack of government support. The sole remaining prototype now lies abandoned at an empty lot in Villamor Air Base.

we cant see improvements coz your we are not part of the AFP....we should not compare our AFP to what our neighbors have..we have different problems compare to them..relax...it just a matter of time....

and besides we dont have any external threat...

The Defiant 300 was a quixotic project of that quixotic ATO chief Panfilo Villaruel who, as some of you may recall, stormed the NAIA control tower in 2003 to protest the ills of government. For all his trouble he ended up being shot and killed by security forces while doing a telephone interview. His labored breathing and death rattle were captured live on national radio.

Anyway, the Defiant 300 looked and flew like a T-34, but its composite construction was probably heavier than the original. There would have been no comparative advantage to manufacturing the aircraft locally. The cost per unit may have been prohibitive given that the PAF could only buy so many units and hundreds, even thousands of airframes are needed for economies of scale to kick in so that the price will be reasonable. Besides, with, what, over 90% of the aircraft components needing importation, what was the point?

Villaruel also had a "Hummingbird" helicopter project, supposedly an indigenous light helicopter. But what it was was really the German-manufactured Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm MBB-105 helicopter with a revised forward fuselage. It used MBB-105 components, of which the government-owned Philippine Aerospace Development Corp (PADC) had plenty on stock because of a prior local assembly deal on the helicopter type. MBB saw right through it and threatened to sue if the project wasn't stopped.

Anyone here know about the AJI Pinto jet trainer? A US two-seat jet trainer design that was bought by the Philippines. The intention was to manufacture the aircraft locally but like the Defiant, Hummingbird and other indigenous aircraft programs, this too flew into oblivion.

just because we don't have advance aircraft we think that there are no improvements? i ive said before we dont have external threat to focus and the AFP knows that,,our foot soldier sir is a capable as or even better that our Asian neighbors isn't that enough to be proud of? they can now see in the dark..they now have good communication and navigation equipment, gps is not new to them....not to mention last year yata 6 ka PA's ACV 300 arrive...our navy have 3 jacinto class boats went to upgrade one by one..dili na nato e appreciate? and maybee ur airforce can have sokol utility heli variant soon...slowly but surely we are improving we should be proud of that,,,
