AFTER a crushing defeat last year, the opposition bloc at the House of Representatives will again try to impeach President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, but this time via “a long route.”
"Last year, we used the constitutional shortcut,” Senior Deputy Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said Thursday. “We tried to get the number first before we filed the case."

"Now, we will take a long route. We will file the complaint even with only one endorser," the Taguig–Pateros representative told INQ7.net in a telephone interview.

The new complaint against Arroyo will be filed while Congress is in recess and the one-year ban on filing a new impeachment complaint against her lapses, said Cayetano.

The opposition-backed complaint was quashed on a technicality in September with the lower chamber, packed with Arroyo allies, ruling to take up another impeachment complaint filed ahead of it.

Cayetano said the “creeping impeachment” approach was necessary to fend off administration

efforts to thwart fresh opposition bid to oust Arroyo.

"We saw the capability of the administration. During the Erap [nickname of deposed president Joseph Estrada] impeachment, he did not use the appointments or pork to quell the process,” he said. “But this administration, it's doing everything to stop us."

Only 52 legislators voted to impeach the President last year, short of the needed 79 votes to bring the case to the Senate for trial.

But even after surviving the impeachment vote, Arroyo has remained hounded by allegations of electoral fraud, corruption and human rights violations -- the issues raised by the opposition bloc in its complaint.

I hope the pro administration solons will not block the impeachment this time. Truth should come out.

Let the people decide. Or that is what we all going to decide. For me, GMA is no longer the best person to lead the country. She lost her moral ascendancy to the Presidency by calling an election official to tinker with the results of the election. Thus her mandate is questionable.

I think there were other officials who called on an election officer, should they resign also?

The opposition will do anything to gain power, even if it means sabotaging the economy. They don't give a centavo's worth to the people's interests.

Let the opposition do their worst. Show HOW the cheating was done. But as it is, they apparently don't even have any new evidence. The Garci tape is NOT evidence of cheating.

GMA is still the legitimate president unless they can prove otherwise in the impeachment court.

Do you think impeachment is the best solution right now for our economy? This is just a waste of my hard earned tax money.

Lets say GMA will get impeached, In my opinion the same thing will happen to the successor no matter how good his/her leadership is because oppositions/people will always find fault, this will become a cycle in our country. We will become a banana republic wherein it will show how politically immature our government is.

Will you please elaborate how your money as a taxpayer shall be wasted? Impeachment is a CONSTITUTIONAL process. Its sanctioned by no less than the Constitution. But if you mean your money will be wasted because someone will bribed the Congressmen to kill it, then I think I will agree with you.

It doesnt follow. Its not even supported by logic. That is pure speculation.
