Bro, i suggest u browse the manual of your D90. There is a diagram in the first four pages of the manual that will aid you comprehend the functions of each dials, knobs and button present of the camera. Take time to read them. It will help a lot. Everything you want to know about technique and the camera are well explained in the manual.

if shutter priority ky ikaw man mag-set sa aperture then ang cam mo-adjust sa shutter speed
