Soc rescues Joavan again | Sun.Star Network Online
TALISAY City Mayor Socrates Fernandez worked out a settlement between his son Joavan and a subdivision security guard whom the mayor’s son allegedly threatened last Saturday.
A defeated mayoral candidate said he was not surprised by Joavan’s latest incident and said Fernandez’s reelection means similar antics can be expected of the mayor’s son.

Fernandez reacted yesterday to reports his son threatened to shoot security guard Clito Dandan, 42, who barred Joavan from entering the Vista Grande Subdivision in Barangay Bulacao, Talisay City last Saturday afternoon.
Fernandez, in an interview yesterday, said he approached the president of the subdivision’s homeowners’ association to inquire about the incident.
During the meeting, the subdivision president assured him the matter between Dandan and Joavan was “settled” and was nothing but a slight misunderstanding.
At 3:15 p.m. last Saturday, Joavan, on board his green Pajero, allegedly approached Dandan and started to threaten him with a .45 caliber pistol.
Dandan, according to a police report, said Joavan was irked when he tried to bar him from entering the subdivision.
Dandan had called Joavan’s attention after residents of the subdivision complained he repeatedly created noise with his motorcycle late at night.
Joavan allegedly uttered threats against Dandan, which prompted the security guard to report to the police.
He quoted the mayor’s son as saying: “Ikaw buanga ka ha, pusilon tika ron, wala pa raba ta maghuman (I just might shoot you. I’m not done with you yet).”
After that, Joavan reportedly returned to his vehicle and sped toward Barangay Tabunok.
In a text message to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday, former Provincial Board member Raul Bacaltos said he was not surprised by the reported incident, saying the Talisay City mayor’s son acts like “the king of Talisay.”
“This means another three years of abuse of power,” said Bacaltos, apparently referring to the fresh term Joavan’s father won in the May 10 elections.
Dandan’s wife, Nerry, told Sun.Star Cebu they have no intention of filing charges against Joavan as they fear they might just lose the case in the end.
The 38-year-old housemaid, who also works in a Vista Grande household, said: “Wala na mi’y plano nga mokiha kay lig-on lig-on baya na siya. Anak man gud na siya sa mayor (We don’t plan to sue because he’s going to be a formidable opponent. He is the mayor’s son).”
Joavan’s troubles have prompted calls from political leaders in Talisay, including some of the mayor’s allies, for the mayor to get him under control.
Earlier this year, an armed Joavan allegedly threatened a couple from Naga City after he sideswiped them with his vehicle near the Barangay Lawaan III and Pooc junction.
Also this year, Joavan was again in the news after he allegedly bullied two pump boys and a security guard in a gasoline station in Barangay Bulacao.
The supposed victims have refused to file charges.
