Default ATI as primary, NVIDIA for Physx

    update! posted by kennruss -

just an update to this thread..there's a new version available for the hybrid physx mod....this version will not require you to do a "dummy dongle" or extend the display on a windows 7 system (xp/2003 still requires the display to be extended though)...

just a simple install of nvidia drivers (257.21 WHQL ) and the hybrid physx patch/mod (v1.04ff) will do... i tried it on mine and it worked...

    these are the installation instructions:

    for Windows 7
    1. Install the needed GeForce driver 256 package. Update PhysX SS (only 9.10.0223 or later) if needed.
    2. Use the mod to patch all needed files and registry values automatically.
    3. [optional] Use command line files to set a desired configuration.

    for Windows XP/2003
    1. Install the needed GeForce driver 256 package. Update PhysX SS (only 9.10.0223 or later) if needed.
    2. Use the mod to patch all needed files and registry values automatically.
    3. Extend the display assigned to NVIDIA GPU. Or make sure it is extended already.
    4. [optional] Use command line files to set a desired configuration.

you can check the NGOHQ website for more details: Hybrid PhysX mod v1.03 / v1.04ff
    ========================

a guide was posted by Sir Andz, posting a different approach.
for those who are interested running an ATI card as primary with NVIDIA card for physx.
this is how we did it and hope this would help.

disclaimer : research has been done for these to work, there are a lot of topics found in the internet regarding this. we were able to complete the setup by incorporating all the topics and by trial and error of the different hardware and software found surrounding the topic. this is only for sole experimentation and the thrill of it. please be careful while doing the procedure as you would need to work on your beloved hardware and there will be instances that may arise.

idea introduced to me by : oli_826

    hardware you need to secure:
an ATI card, the best card is something that would best support the native resolution of your monitor
    a motherboard with 2 pci-e slot
a NVIDIA card with at least 32 stream processors, that is the least needed for physx to be enabled in a NVIDIA card
    a dvi-to-vga adapter
3 68ohms 1w resistors (buy these at loud and clear or advance electronics for php1 each)
just make sure your power supply is up for the job

needed software and their links are posted below

    make the dongle
purpose : to enable your nvidia card, this would make your card think that there is a monitor connected to it, no need for an extra monitor

how i did my dummy dongle

    install the video cards
the ATI card should go to the first pci-e slot, the NVIDIA card should go either to the second or third pci-e, whatever the case maybe
place the dummy dongle at the NVIDIA card

should look like this, see the dummy dongle connected at the 8800gt card (lower left)

make sure to power your cards if they need one

now you install the software and configure
i have tried this on windows 7 alone, they say it won't work for vista because vista won't allow 2 drivers installed on their OS, it may work on XP but i was not able to try it

    first :
turn on your system, normally windows 7 will detect your NVIDIA card and install the driver for it. that's okay, let it install
after windows 7 install the driver, install the driver update; download from here

    techPowerUp! :: Downloads

    i used the 195.62 windows 7 driver

install the physx patch, download from here

Hybrid PhysX mod 1.02: 195.xx drivers and Win XP support | PhysXInfo.com - PhysX News

on the screen you should see the button cake
    click on cake

    patch should be made
    when patch is successful

    click burn
    done

more often than not, patch will not run on normal mode
    boot to safe mode
    same procedure
    run the patch
    click on cake
    patch should be made
    when patch is successful
    click burn
    done
    boot in normal mode

    back to normal mode
    right click on your desktop
    click screen resolution
there will be 2 monitors, normally it will detect the NVIDIA card
if not, click detect, select monitor 2, on the drop-down choose your NVIDIA card, leave resolution, choose (try connect anyway on vga) and hit on apply. on the multiple display, select extend desktop too this display, click okay

after this, there will be instances that your mouse pointer would go lost itself on the far right of your screen, you can hold and drag monitor to is such a way that it is on the upper-right of monitor 1 to prevent this from happening

    enable physx
right click on your desktop, go to NVIDIA control panel and enable physx thru set physx configuration
    click ok

    you are DONE!
    great job

    now to check
you can run a software that would check for physx
you can also run BATMAN Arkham Asylum Benchmark to check how and if physx works

I would really want to post screen shots of the desktop but my brother's hard drive failed and i need to give him my hard drive
once i secure another hard drive i might update the post with screen shots

if you feel there is a need to correct some procedures, i'm open to comments.
we can discuss and still show some respect for each other.

Here Goes Everything. This Guy Made it Happen [For Us at Least]... Up for your Thread Sir. I'm sure This will be flooded with Questions Soon.

Thanks Sir Being_Zen. You're the Man.

unsa'y risks sa pag short sa imong vga adapter with resistors?

  5. #5
@poldopunk, sir, from the topics that i've read, the risk are none. since you don't really short circuit your video card, the resistors act in a way as if there is a monitor connected to that port. i've tried to change the placement of the resistors, somehow if it is not the correct configuration then it is as if no monitor is connected on that port.

  6. #6
ah, ok. so in other words, pwede ra diay bisan unsa like uncoated na paper clip...pag emulate lang ug pins sa male vga connector(?).

  7. #7
sir pwede ka maka post og close up or macro shot sa
pagbutang sa resistor diha sa dvi to vga converter?

or pwede ra bisag asa e insert ang tiil sa resistor?

  8. #8
^ click lang ang pic bai, dmelsie. klaro man ang shot sa resistors.

  9. #9
@poldopunk, i think the paper clip will not do since it will not have the capacity in telling the card that, as if, a monitor is connected in it's port. the resistors are acting like a monitor is connected.

@dmelsie, you can enlarge the pic, sir.

Lahi ra kaau ang BATMAN Arkham Asylum na Game with Physx - [You Make sure you run Benchmark first with your ATI] - then check if naa Physx - almost 2x ang changes sa FPS [min ug max].

Nahuman nagud nako ang Batman - Challenges nalang ang Kuwang.

Thanks sa Pag Share sa Knowledge Sir.
