WTF = Wonderful Turtle Facts
I am extremely amazed about their uniqueness. They're definitely different in all aspects, from the physical feature to the amount of care that's needed. They are somewhat the freshwater equivalent of the sea turtle, from the bird like beak to the flying like motion of the way they swim. Indeed an A+ species among any other fully aquatic turtles.
I myself is an advocate for nature and I hate to admit the fact that I wanted this turtle so much when they could have been happier swimming freely in the waters of Papua New Guinea and Australia......... I am saddened that I may be perceived as a contributor to the illegal trade because I patronized into the purchase of the said species.
But then again I considered a few facts that regardless of my advocacy, the FRT's natural habitat is also depleting and that even in their own country of origin they are also threatened. An example is a situation in Papua New Guinea wherein some habitat and nesting grounds are constantly destroyed by herds of Cattle that needs to take a plunge into the water (where the turtles lay their eggs) to drink, God knows how many eggs are destroyed everyday plus the fact that this species is a highly prized FOOD ITEM by the indigenous peoples within its range both in Australia and New Guinea.
In CHINA, the imports of eggs taken from the WILD is rampant. The breeders there or should I say Incubators have a lot less investments since all they need is an incubator and a little knowledge on the care of the little ones when they hatch. I hate to say this, but this will never stop.... even if we stop buying, because the likely thing to happen if the Philippines or any other S.E.A. countries will stop the imports, is that, the people in CHINA will start putting these turtles to the table of some restaurants, which they are very much fond of doing to a lot of turtle species and any other animal.
I guess the bigger issue here is not just whether It's legal or Illegal to keep FRTs..... The more impacting issue is a lot of us are irresponsible, from the ones who are selling to the ones who are buying. The Cuteness and Niceness of a pet shouldn't be just the only basis for us to buy them, what we need to ask ourselves first is "Do I have what it takes to care for this cute little thing?" "Am I willing to spend a few years with this pet?"
