Why did Richard Gomez accept the lead villain role in "Captain Barbell" when he himself played a superhero before in "Super Islaw"? "I was really the one who told my manager, Douglas Quijano, to put me as the villain here," he says. "Kasi most of the awards I got are for dark roles, like ‘Dahas’ and ‘Wating.’ At ang ‘Super Islaw’ naman, which I did 20 years ago, napakalayo na rito. The special effects then were very primitive to what we have now. Honestly, I’m proud and excited to be a part of this big-budgeted telefantasya."

GMA-7 currently has two toprated local shows in primetime, "Majika" and "I Luv New York." There’s no doubt that with the entry of "Captain Barbell" on Monday, May 29, they will further strengthen their supremacy in the ratings game.

"Captain Barbell" is an ambitious production that updates the original work of the late Mars Ravelo. It starts with a futuristic story in 2106 when Captain B (Paolo Bediones) and his wife (Snooky Serna) are persecuted by the mysterious owner of Live Corporation, a pioneer in human cloning, simply known as the General. Paolo puts Snooky and their son, Arell, in a time capsule and sends them back to the year 1992 (shades of "Smallville").

Arell gets separated from his mom and adopted by another couple (Ricky Davao and Jackielou Blanco). He is now called Teng and they are cruel to him, including his sister (Sunshine Dizon). He gets love and affection only from his grandparents (Dante Rivero and Gloria Sevilla). Teng grows up weak to be Richard Gutierrez. He works as a janitor in school and gets oppressed by the bullies (Ryan Eigenman and Jeremy Marquez). His childhood friends are Camille Prats and Ryan Yllana, but he is in love with newcomer Rhian Ramos.

Another young man he saves from a car accident (Patrick Garcia) becomes his friend but Patrick turns out to be the son of the richest man in town, Viel (Richard Gomez), who becomes Captain Barbell’s arch enemy (shades of "Spiderman"). Aside from Viel, there’s another villain from the future pursuing our hero, a cyborg named Commander X (Ian Veneracion). All in all, there are more than 20 stars in the powerhouse cast. You’d note that two of them, Patrick and Camille, are recruits from ABS-CBN who’re now both managed by Arnold Vegafria.
