Most Nikons are made in Thailand naman jud except for their very high end models. I am presently a Nikon D90 and D5000 user myself but I have used several Canon DSLR including the 350D, 20D, 30D and 40D. Let me share with you my experiences with them. The company I work for used to have a variety of Canon DSLRs from the 20D to the 40D. In those days, Canon had no service center in Cebu yet. So when something would break (body or lens), we would send it to the service center in Manila and would get i back in between 3 months to a year. So grabe ang downtime namo. 2 years or so ago, our company shifted to Nikon despite Nikon having no service center here. We haven't looked back since. Ang Nikon walay service center but wala man sad naguba so far so its all good for us. The Nikon's shutters also seem to lasting longer. We have a D2x with more than 150k actuations and still going strong. As for the image quality, it's all very similar once you learn to adjust the settings on the camera to your taste. I do find the Nikon interface to be more intuitive and user friendly but I believe that it's more a matter of taste and some people also prefer the Canon interface better.
Nikon's lenses may be pricier than Canons but if you take a look at reviews on the net, you will realize that they also get better reviews. At the end of the day, its all up to you and I don't think you will go wrong as long as you stick to either Canon or Nikon. If I were to do it all again, I would choose a camera brand based on what most people I know are using. That would make it easier for me to ask for help, borrow equipment and buy used stuff from friends. So I would still end up with Nikon since 90% of my friends are Nikon users. But that is just me.
What is important is that you do join this wonderful hobby, no matter what DSLR you end up buying. My unsolicited advice? If you buy now, get the D90 since you can afford it. If you can wait for a couple of months, wait for the 550D. I don't think you will go wrong either way.
Peace!!!!
If you decide to buy a camera from Istorya, I can tell you that crazywhimsy is a very reliable seller. I have bought 3 Canon Ixus 100s over the past 2 months from her. I would surely buy from her again.
