    Default Lacson hiding, explains flight

    Lacson hiding, explains flight

BY EFREN L. DANAO Senior Reporter

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said on Tuesday that he left the country to escape harassment “by the Department of Justice (DOJ) upon the order of Malacaņang.”

In a press statement, Lacson said he had “correctly suspected” that the alleged harassment would never stop.

Lacson has been indicted for the murder of publicist Bubby Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in 2000.

He was indicted based on the affidavit of Cesar Mancao 2nd who testified on an alleged conversation between Lacson and Michael Ray Aquino on board a car. Lacson was then-chief of the Philippine National Police and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force with Mancao and Aquino as his subordinate officers.

He has been absent from the Senate since the resumption of session on January 18. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said the travel order he had given to Lacson had already lapsed and he is considered absent. Enrile said he could not remember the details of Lacson’s request for official travel.

Lacson said that he would personally dispute the legal presumption that flight is an indication of guilt.

“I am not guilty but I cannot risk putting my life and security at the mercy of that evil conspiracy,” he said.

Lacson, who did not indicate the country where he is presently staying, said his concern at present was his personal safety and security.

“I will not allow Mrs. Arroyo and her cohorts in the DOJ the pleasure of seeing my life miserable and in danger,” he said.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said that Lacson left the country for Hong Kong on January 5 and has not returned since. Government prosecutors filed the information for double murder against Lacson on January 7 before the sala of Judge Myra Fernandez of Branch 18 of the Regional Trial Court of Manila.

On January 8, Lacson’s name was included on the watchlist of the Bureau of Immigration to prevent him from leaving the country, unless allowed by the Court.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago said that if she were in the shoes of Lacson, she would also flee the country.

“Murder is a heinous crime and non-bailable. You can never know what will happen to you once you are in jail,” she said.

She conceded that everybody, especially a senator, is expected to follow the law no matter how harsh it may be.

“But in reality, very few do so. Nobody would want to be in the shoes of Senator Lacson,” she said.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said that only Enrile knows why he allowed Lacson to leave the country. He said he had heard that Lacson is currently in Australia, but would not vouch for its authenticity.

"Tell it to the marines" as the saying goes ... flight is tantamount to admission of guilt! Being an officer and a gentleman, Ping should have faced the music ..especially because He says "He is innocent". No soldier runs away from the battle .. unless of course, it is Ping. And he wanted to become President of the Philippines once!
