I suggest you do your own research. Personally, I asked the same question a year ago. It was a Nikon D80 versus Canon 450D for me. The Nikonians were telling me to join them because (1) Canon cams have the dreaded Err99 (which happily hasn't happened to me yet) and (2) Nikon cameras don't need to be repaired so I shouldn't be worried about Columbia not having a service center here in Cebu. That's not true as two of my officemates who had Nikons had to ship their cameras to Manila for repairs. One of them took 2 months to repair.

Honestly, I would have bought a Nikon but I got turned off by Columbia's (SM) reply re repair - I had to pay shipping and handling to and from Manila.

I got Canon simply because it has a service center in Mabolo and they have extended warranty periods (not sure if Nikon has same post-sales guarantees too). I heard that Canon's service isn't that prompt either but at least I don't have to pay for S&H to Manila for major repairs.

And oh, I started with a point and shoot - Canon Powershot A630 before I invested in a DSLR. I hear good things about Canon's S90.

go get a canon if you worry about service centers... it will surely come in handy when shooting under the rain... BTW, new canon code error went out over the rainy fluvial/procession/grand mardigras to quite a number of canon cams... error 1, 70, aside from the usual 99...

ako adto ko sa canon kay:
    1. more or less barato ug lens compared sa competitor brands
    2. naay service center sa cebu
    3. maka-mount ug m42 lens w/o daghang chuvaness (labi na cropped bodies)
(and why would I mount an m42 lens? they are cheap but very good IQ)
    4. naay capability to "self heal" if mag-hot pixel imong sensor
    (eat that nikon! :P)

of course, mas astig i-pronounce ang "canon" kay sa "naeeykown"

(bitaw, lingaw2x ra ni akoa ha) hehehe

@aris: (OT) Mupalit naka M42 lens? Try looking for good ones at Allen's. I need to go out more with mine so I can practice manual focusing. As I've experienced in the Sinulog, hyperfocal distance focusing does work for long distances but close up work on a crop takes some getting used to. The distance scale on lenses are calibrated for full frame cameras. 3 feet isn't really 3 feet but more like 4.8 feet.

He he, you forgot to mention that while M42 lenses would have problems with Nikon, Nikon can accept older Nikon manual focus only lenses without special adapters. The good news is (based on our friend Dick at the office) that Nikon still confirms auto focus with these lenses. The bad news is that the exposure indicator doesn't work. Bali sa ato. That's life.

And oh, don't forget that male Canon users sound more macho when they say, "Miss, would you like to see my big CANON?"
