It is not only the westerners who misuse the word, too. A lot of Cebuano anime enthusiasts also mistake the word for something else. I know i did back then..

And who knows, maybe we also did shameful/embarrassing things as an anime fan, right? Soo.. chill lang mo. Luoy sad siya. Haha.. As long as we're enjoying our hobby.

Well, i think she was harmless and not so over the top, compared to others i've seen. Still, it was disappointing that she said "otaku".. But oh well. Mura ra na ug "salvage" na word. It means to save something, right? Pero sa ato, murag patyon man cguro or i-murder. Haha.. So yeah, the word changes and i hope people will start researching what the word really is..

@inken: OMG READ THE BOOK! I enjoyed the series, the movie was ok (was there an animation of it?), the manga was ok too. BUT OMG THE BOOK WAS ENTERTAINING. It was like they pasted the whole 2ch thread to the book xD. I had times where i couldn't stop smiling, and to think i was at Bo's when i was reading that!! xD Hahaha.. the shame. I wasn't able to contain my giggles due to the cuteness of Hermes and Train Maaaan aaaahhhhhh

@blissy: Lol @ 2ch thread, but yeah, that was apparent even in the liveaction (And i meant, drama. real people ... If you're ok with those.) I didn't finish the movie; thought it wouldn't compare to the series. Haha, i found the forum posts entertaining as well! and I laugh and swoon in the comfort of my own house where i watched it. I heard a good difference between the drama and the book is that they gave Hermes a more major role. (w/c is ok since Misaki Ito as Hermes is just dreaaamy. ü) xD

I actually watched the liveaction first, then saw the other versions, and then the book. Yeah, the book's more about Train Man, because the book's content is the uhhh.. 2ch thread xD. So it was more of Train Man's POV (and the other posters of the thread).

Yeah, Misaki Ito as Hermes was really nice. She had a super different role in Gokusen that i was completely surprised when i saw her in Densha Otoko xD (i heard she's married now.. ?)

Well, she may be partially correct when she said that an otaku is an anime freak, but I wouldn't call her an otaku. She's more like an eccentric person who is new to anime, a newbie.

Outside of Japan, most people who claim to be otakus are novices to anime. People who, aside from watching mainstream shounen titles, have not watched a variety of titles. It also seem like these people got the term from other newbies, most likely from the internet.

There was an anime... well, not an anime of Densha Otoko, but an anime related to it, called Getsumen To Heiki Mina. It's basically the anime of Mina, the character which was popular with the otakus in the Densha Otoko world. Not really a must watch for Densha Otoko fans, just watch it if you are curious on why it was popular in the Densha Otoko world. (warning: mahou shoujo)

Yeah, heard of Getsumen To Heiki Mina. I only saw the opening song; nice animation, i must say. But i couldn't remember that much of the anime (since i haven't watch it), but i remember that really really expensive Mina figure. xD (i think it was available sa Wasabitoys. Also, the actor who played Densha Otoko broke a Mina fig in the set xD)
