"Otaku" on American Idol

The audition of Mere Doyle, who calls herself an "otaku", on American Idol 2010 Boston Auditions.

clearly, she got this wrong: otaku =/= anime freak

Considering that the general population doesn't know what the term otaku really means, this will no doubt give the society a wrong idea on what an otaku is.

I think having enthusiasm is a good thing, but people should control that enthusiasm and learn to express it at the appropriate time.


istoryans, what are your thoughts on this?

on a side note: weeaboo?

I wouldn't call her a 'weeaboo' since: she did not use the 'wapanese' way of speaking; she did not sing a japanese song for her audition (which I thought she was going to); and her costumes were okay and were not too flashy either. She was just a bit too enthusiastic about being an otaku... and compared to this, I have seen worse.

The otaku word has evolved and deviated from its original meaning. Well, at least for foreigners..

But yeah, this is something new. Although, she could have said "anime enthusiast" or something.. :/

But good luck to her though, even if she didn't get in.. As long as she's enjoying it.

I thought she was harmless. I admire the enthusiasm though.

Then again, the word "otaku" is commonly misperceived by foreigners as blissy said.

my friend informed me about this episode of AI and I immediately searched for it on youtube... I felt the shame...lol... maybe she was really a freak..haha
