A proposed clean and organized S&O board this coming new year

A lot of what you point out can be discussed in the Philosophy section. It seems to me that your view on atheism borders that of a religious organization in the name of not believing in a deity. I don't see the need to discuss your non-belief in a God. If you don't believe in God, then move on. This is what many, many accomplished atheists do. If you haven't seen The Atheism Tapes already, watch it. Perhaps it may soothe your ruffled feathers. For one who disagrees so much with religion, you seem to think about it a lot and seem to want to change people's beliefs ... something religion has tried to do over the centuries.

well, i'm sure there are a lot of people who wants to discuss about atheism. obviously this is not the only forum board where i can talk about the subject, so there is really no need to create one if you feel it's not deemed necessary. i just feel it's biased to leave it out while keeping a thread for the "Devout". it's like a two-fold blow if you ask me.

Chad, think of it as an organization of fraternities. Let's call it OOF (Organization of Fraternities).

Now say, you and other likeminded people have this idea that fraternities are not good, and thus should be disbanded. You organize yourself into a group, and then, realizing that there is a significant number of your "troops" already, you boldly go to the OOF office stating that you wish to register your organization under this group, if only to "enlighten" people about the fact that fraternities are harmful to individuals. What do you think the OOF with think?

a) OOF will state that, in the first place, your org is NOT a fraternity, so why should they accept your organization into their group?

b) They will also state that, your presence will only create animosity instead of camaraderie, simply because your intent is to disband fraternities.

c) OOF will also state that, if you are truly against organized groups such as fraternities, then why are you "fraternizing" amongst yourselves and mobilizing as a unit--isn't what you are doing already akin to what fraternities do? So you become hypocrites.

Eh? Take the post for what it is--an analogy of why an Atheism thread has no room in the S & O area. I actually would have liked one to exist there, pero tama si Vern eh, it's a square peg in a round hole. The election "nuisance candidate" analogy attempt of yours is a bit of a stretch--and after all I have no intent of giving you some "hidden message" or whatnot--my original post was just an analogy of the situation.

i get your point. you and vern seem to have this mindset that i'm trying to change other people's beliefs; that is not my aim, so therefore, your analogy doesn't fit. i think it just seems nice to have an Atheism child board if you have "The Devout" board on the other side of the spectrum. i mean let's face it, what topics and discussions can you really expect under "The Devout" board? it would be cool to have a board totally opposite of it without the nuisance of having the two clash together (because they are separate boards), and vern made it clear, that if you bash other people's beliefs, you'll get an infraction. so my aim is not to bash other people, but to discuss about atheism, plain and simple.

believe me, i get that. those were just examples of topics that can be posted if there was an Atheism/Atheist board. that doesn't even include the rest of the topics i mentioned such as anti-theism, agnosticism, etc... i mean, those sort of topics don't really belong to Philosophy. besides, if topics such as those are posted in the said board, most probably, it would get locked in no time.

i'm referring more on the former. if we talk about being biased, aren't we all biased in one way or another? i can't really blame you, sir. managing a forum as big as iStorya is not an easy task. i was merely hoping that you'd hear me out.

You're forgetting that this is NOT about you or your aims--it's about how other people (by this, I mean the religious and devout) would react to the existence of such a subforum. You aims may be good, but how certain are you that other people understand or even care about your aims?

I remember a conversation inside an airconditioned bus back in mindanao. A guy was eating fresh Durian, and his buddy sitting beside him said "Bay, ayaw nalang sa kaon niana, baho ra ba na." He then smirked and replied, "Dili man lagi baho sa ako, lami gani." and continued eating. You could imagine what the other people on the bus (especially those who couldn't stand the stench of Durian) felt. I was seated behind them and didn't mind the smell because I do eat Durian and its smell doesn't bother me. But I'm sure there were other people on the bus that didn't like its smell.
