Why limit your options to Canon or Nikon, when there's a lot more to choose from?? These are not the only brands to manufacture slr's??
There's: Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony, Samsung, Leica, Sigma..
Even Hasselblad, Mamiya, Oakley...
1. Get a camera. Either Canon or Nikon.
The reason, I would recommend these two brands and not the others is because they are the most commonly used. Therefore, there would be more people who could teach you side-by-side with the same camera model. And they could lend you their lenses and other accessories first before buying them.
2. Read the camera's manual.
This is annoying but most newbies fail to read the manual.
3. Go out shooting. A photo walk in a park will do. Try to do the instructions on the manual.
4. Get a book on basic exposure. Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson really helped me. It's available in bookstores in Cebu. Do the exercises recommended in the book. Shoot again.
5. Get a book on composition. Learning to See Creatively also by Bryan Peterson was very helpful to me. Do the exercises too if there are any. Shoot again.
6. If you know an intermediate or advance level photographer, ask him/her to teach you. Buy her dinner or coffee the least.
7. Attend a seminar. FPPF will hold a seminar next year from January 6-9.
8. Join a photography club. It is much more fun and safe to shoot with a group. Plus you can pool resources to pay for models, venue, etc. Also most people are helpful and they could teach you.
9. Join the online community for photographers. They are more than willing to help out when you have questions. Use istorya.net, pinoyphotography.org, digitalphotographer.com.ph. All of these forums are Philippine-based. You can also try international forums.
i would suggest that she should decide first if that's what she really wants and not just because most people now owns a dslr or a cam... venturing into this hobby takes time, money, passion.. its not that easy. she might end up disappointed buying an expensive equipment just because most people are into photography now...
if she has decided then the acquiring process begins. if she has friends that have dslrs then let her borrow first to get that feeling and to check what fits, im sure she ahs friends who own one.
then she need to check reviews on cams preferably nikon and canon units(recommended) so she can see as to what features of the cam that will best suit her photographic needs.
when decided then.. she can then buy one.
and while doing all that let her login or become a member of ISTORYA.NET or other forums as what sir lemreyes said and read what other people has to say.. i learned it this way as well, it might be a help for her too. be interactive..
in these forums, you'll get a lot and meet some friends, to start with you can hang out with IPC members..
this will definitely guide you in your new found or if not long sought after hobby.
and most important: BE FRIENDS WITH MASTER KARLO... HE'S THE JEDI!
gud luck

start with a budget. how much are you willing to spend for this hobby as your initial investment.
mao ni si bro KarloMatuguinas, ayaw jud pakyasa ang iya mga workshop kay siya ang nag okit sa tanan nga kaalam sa potograpiko nga inyo gikinahanglan sa adlaw adlaw nga panginabuhi.

Start with a Nikon and join a class to get acquainted with basic photography and your Camera , reading a lot just clutters your mind with a whole lot of info, read and shoot would be good or have Carlo do a one on one class with you, should help, peace bro
