Thread: Halo: Reach

Halo: Reach teaser will use real-time Xbox 360 graphics instead of externally-produced CGI, according to Bungie.

The first in-game footage of Halo Reach will be shown at this year’s Video Game Awards. Geoff Keighley, one of the few people who got a chance to see the trailer before the debut, was very excited by what he saw. He made the following statement on the latest Major Nelson podcast:

At the VGAs, we actually go down on to the Planet Reach and see this game for the first time. It’s all going to be in-game stuff. This is not CG. This is not live-action like all the kids on twitter are speculating. You will get a first glimpse at the world of Reach, which is phenomenal. I think it’s going to be the biggest game of next year by far. Folks love ODST and though it was great but when people see the huge leap forward Bungie is taking with Reach, I don’t know if you seen it yet, but everyone that I talked to that’s been on the team and seen it is incredibly excited about that time.

The Video Game Awards will air on December 12th at 8:00 PM. Halo Reach will be released next fall exclusively on the Xbox 360.

This is great and all but I'm also hoping Bungie would flesh out Master Chief's character a bit (if he is indeed featured on this game). All we know of John 117 so far is that 'he's a pretty cool guy, eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.'

It would be nice if they could give a backstory on the Master Chief. That he is actually a descendant of the great sporting hero 'Tiger Woods'. And like his great great great grandfather, he likes to screw around with female Spartans, ODSTs, and hot Marines when is he is not on duty.

This specific Spartan from the trailer intrigued me. Makes me wonder 'Ghost' from Modern Warfare 2 actually lived, then frozen, and later genetically modified and woken up in the future to become a Spartan.

Ok that's a bit far-stretched, but I'm hoping the multiplayer part of the game allows us to customize our armor this way.

It seems Bungie used a different game engine for Halo: Reach. The visuals of the trailer, which Bungie claimed are real-time graphics, look much more detailed than Halo 3 and ODST ever looked. Hopefully, the game will be impressive with gameplay refinements.

Read this analysis of Halo: Reach's in-game visuals.

If you haven’t seen the world premiere of Halo: Reach at the Spike TV Video Game Awards 2009, then, well, it doesn’t make much difference. It wasn’t the lackluster “That’s it?” of the E3 2K9 reveal but it wasn’t the awesome testosterone fest of Halo 2’s (ultimately watered down) New Mombasa gameplay reveal at E3 2003. That said, Halo: Reach looks far better than any Halo to date. Queries have been arising as to whether the game is running on a new engine or not, but we can confirm one thing: Yes, Reach is running in real time.

Read IGN's analysis of the Halo: Reach trailer!

We finally have some in-engine footage of Halo: Reach to pore through and speculate on. If you haven't yet seen the trailer, make sure you watch it right now -- this isn't the sort of thing any Halo fan wants to miss. I've watched it several times now, going through it frame by frame, to see what little goodies I could find that might be easily passed over on first glance. As it turns out, this trailer offers up a lot more information than you might initially think.

The trailer begins innocuously enough. The camera is first set through the eyes of a Spartan as he puts on a helmet. The view then pulls out to show a Warthog and a few transport helicopters moving across a field towards a base at the bottom of some hills. This first character introduced is referenced as having a "lone wolf" past and never speaks through the trailer, possibly indicating him as the main protagonist.
