Whats the best way to rip original DVDs? (of course not for piracy; just for psp & backup purposes). I need help regarding:

-what software to use
-other stuff to know about
-easiest way to transfer movies to the psp
-etc

difference between dvdrips and DVDR's

dvdrips are encoded versions of the movie normally avi files which can normally only be viewed on the computer, some dvd players can now handle xvid/divx avi files so you can watch them on your TV.

if your dvd player doesnt support xvid/divx (not too many do) then you need to re-encode the avi to some kind of mpeg in order to write it to CD/DVD so you are able to watch on your TV. (its not quite as simple as that, but its close enough Smile )

DVDRs are actual images of the real dvd (they are "rips" too as some features are taken out to allow for maximum quality [as the source is normaly a DVD9 with is about 8.5GB]) but the quality is far superior on them (as they are 4.5GB whereas the rips are about 700Mb). so you can burn the DVDR images straight to disk without any kind of conversions so they are ready to watch.

if you mean DivX to XviD conversion, there's actually no need for that unless you have a standalone player which can't fully support XviD's features.

but if you mean DVD to XviD/DivX conversion, check out the Fairuse Wizard (http://www.fairusewizard.com). the light edition is free for personal use.
