IMO - I think there's nothing wrong starting with film but have you considered the cost of film pictures being develop? I believe the advantage of digital is you can correct a mistake on the spot but when you are in film you just have to wait until you develop your picture thats why every shot counts in film.
You don't have to own a DSLR just to start photography. An ordinary p&s with manual settings can do. If your really keen on getting a DSLR why not try getting a D50 or D70 second hand.
Actually, I've already started in photography using a p&s. and also, I've already think of the cons of having a film slr. I think, here in states is cheaper developing and buying films compare there in PI. I know it would take long in order to see results, but I think that is one of the first step on studying in photography "patience" hehehe... ---which is, I also want to know how to develop a photograph in a dark room, however, i don't have any place to set up a dark room in my house. I know, one of the biggest advantage of using digital cameras nowadays is about "editing" but how would I learn if I would rely on using photoshop and other editing programs to enhance or to beautify my shots. dba?! I've got a lot of friends or known a lot of people, make their photographs so stunning because of the help of photoshop. it is just like a woman, without using a make up, pangit cya tan-awon. and about having a second hand DSLR?! I would take a brand new one na lang cguro, since prices of dslrs here are really sulit, but right now, di jud nako afford. and I am also in the mood man sad to have an slr camera... "vintage"--sa uban pa tao. and I think it is so fun to learn photography using an film slr. I am happy to learn the hard way first rather than learning the simple ways (using dslr) without knowing the basic ones and other hard way stuffs in photography world.
