bag-o palang ko nahuman research about freshwater octopus, dili man diay proven nga nag-exist jud ni..
well anyway, if it's true, we just killed the last three of the species "mantaga" before the said species was formally "discovered"..nice unta kaayo 'to na mabutang ang Cebu na the only place with confirmed freshwater octopus..
by the way boss, IMHO lang ha. there are no "bad" or "good" animals (aside from man -or not?) since animals will always act upon instinct..example, can you say "bad" lion? or "good" bangus? If it's a predator, then he's only doing what it's supposed to do..

"Mantaga" is a Viasayan name for a giant fresh water octopus that live in the abyss of inland lakes in the like of Buhisan, Malubog and even in Kawasan. This is a part of the Visayan folklore like the "sigbin" of Southern Cebu.

In the middle of 1980's, Civil Engineering graduates of Cebu Institute of Technology was hired by a German Engineer (family name is Lotz) connected with the Phil-German Special Energy Program as he was tasked by CEBECO to develop a mini hydro plant to supply electricity on southwestern side of Cebu. Five were hired and together with a Filipino consultant the seven of them formed the G-7 Devt. Corporation. They make the road from the chapel of Matutinao up to the powerhouse with the aid of the barehands of the local folks where no heavy equipments were used. They encamped in that village after the first river crossing (near the powerhouse). They stayed there for months and years. They are the one who constructed that mini-dam, penstock, the tunnel, the powerhouse and the arched bridge. Foreigners from the nearby Badian Island Beach Resort and the former Green Island of Banhigan, visit the falls even at night time but they always receive some forewarning coming from the folks to be very extra careful. This is what they say. "Modagit gyud na ang Kawasan". Why? Then take a look at the picture below.

There is a big bird perching on Kawasan waiting for its prey. Look at the picture and you can see the shape of the bird which local folks believe to be the cause of deaths there. That is why the engineers said when they were informed about this, they just took a dip on the upper falls or maybe at the source but not here in the main falls.
