Riddle: In front of you, there are 9 coins. They all look absolutely identical, but one of the coins is fake. However, you know that the fake coin is lighter than the rest, and in front of you is a balance scale. What is the least number of weighings you can use to find the counterfeit coin?

Ans: The answer is 2..ú How? Divide the coins into 3 equal piles (3 coins per pile).. Place 1 pile on each scale.. If the scale doesnt tip, then the 6 coins in the scale are real, and the remaining pile has the fake coin. However, if the scale does tip, you know that the counterfeit is in the pile on the side of the scale that raised up (since it is lighter). Either way, you can immediately eliminate 6 coins. With the 3 remaining coins, you can repeat the same process of elimination, then u'll be able to identify which coin is fake..ú
