btw, that last scene where bob chased charlotte on the street, there wasnt supposed to be a kissing scene.
The kiss between Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson at the end of the movie was not in the script, but was an "in the moment" ad-lib between the performers.

i really dig the ending. if the movie ended otherwise, that would have ruined the movie since endings are usually important for most. hehehe. and the music! the music! shoegaze and dream rock!!!

you've told me about how the writer/director managed to make this fictional story seem NOT contrived (even if ultimately, any fictional story IS contrived) and forced.......

best original screenplay............ LIT. had a lack of payoffs, imho. man, i still feel weirded out about it!

but again, and again, and again, i don't always necessarily judge a film by its sp.

heck, HALLOWEEN is a classic in my book even though its a movie with a VERY weak sp.

payoffs? what would you possibly want as a payoff for this film?

them running away together happily ever after? or maybe another shot of charlotte's panties? hahaha

i dont know, i think the script was pretty strong. although some might say otherwise because it lacked dialogue and twists. all it had was some funny moments and awkward situations between the characters where most people could relate.
but that isnt the point of the film. i watched the film, semi-knowingly that the two of them wouldnt and couldnt be together, they knew they had a very short time and they surprisingly made the most of it without intending it to be. maybe thats why charlotte said "let's never come here again coz it wouldnt be as much fun"

that line could mean a lot of things but that could be the way i understand it. its a poignant piece. you only get the meanings if you really pay attention. like those polaroid pictures they look at near the end...

This movie is not about payoffs.

You obviously love and are accustomed to Hollywood films. Most Hollywood screenwriters are obsessed by the 3 act structure, and the importance of conflict and resolution (watch Adaptation for a wonderful analysis and deconstruction of that fact).

This works fine in action, thriller, horror films, where THE PLOT IS THE POINT of the movie, and dialogue is merely the string that holds the scenes together.

This film is not about the plot. The film is about parallel character studies. The beauty is in the little discoveries we make about the characters as the movie goes along.

In traditional films, the questions are always WHO or HOW. In a character study, the question is WHY. Remember PULP FICTION? That was also about the characters, and less about the plot. The joy of watching it was in the conversations and the interactions between the characters. Sure, PF was more stylized and glossy, but it had a similar "lack" of structure as Lost.

Another recent example would be "Y Tu Mama Tambien" which when described, could be summed up as "a road trip involving two horny guys and a lonely older woman." But, the film is much more than that. It is also about many other things, things that are beside the plot, and ironically, are more relevant.
