Default Home-rigged web hosting business: A crazy idea?

Would you think I'm crazy if I rig up my computer as a web host server and link it up to an ordinary 512kbps DSL line?
Can I at least host ten customer web sites with this kind of bandwidth?
Or is web host reselling the better way to go?

    Case Study:
Can you site any physical web hosting business servers ever set up in Cebu?
Are they holding up? Or are they having lots of angry customers with baseball bats on their hands?

even a single domain - if your website has less traffic surely it will survive .. errr let say 1 visitor a day.

using a Globe or PLDT DSL connection, i think it is not allowed. neverthless, it is ok if you only host your personal site but if you are to offer the service commercially, i believe you owe it to your customers to provide a more decent setup than that. just my two cents.

yep, hinay gyud, plus I dont think the 512 package comes with a dedicated IP. To host your own webserver you need at least 2 dedicated IP for your nameserver.

So what kind of internet connection where multiple domain web hosting is allowed?

I know of a company owner who have his web site hosted via his own PLDT 512kbps package. The people who set upped his FreeBSD server managed to work around the problem when one is assigned with a none-dedicated IP. How do you think they did it?

Di kaya. If you rig it up to a regular 512kbps connection, uploading (and most probably downloading) will be hell. Besides, why would you want to run hosting from your own box anyway? Think of all the possible downtimes there could be without the right equipment.

    Mirai is right....

Could you afford to turn on your PC for 24/7? I'm not just talking about the physical resources it might consume, but the security risk also.

Plus, you might be needing your own generator if you want to offer it commercially.. COnsidering the fact that we have an unstable power lines here in CEbu... constant brown outs...dugay pa dyud

You can of course host a website with that current setup. But to host multiple website and use your own nameserverÂ* then you cant. You can however use a free nameserver like zoneedit and point the site to your machines IP. But of course this must be dedicated and you would only need a single IP.

But for the speed, there will be a slight difference because of latency between your ISP and the DNS server located in the US.

If you dont have a dedicated IP, there are always workaround for this. There are a lot of programs and or service that could solve this. But you will encounter problems especially with DNS propagation everytime your IP changes. Another problem is MAIL/SMTP server. There are a lot of complication if you are not on a dedicated IP.

Bottomline, yes you can setup a server in your own machine but it would not be efficient since you are paying both the DSL connection and the electricity to operate your PC 24/7 plus you must do the technical stuff yourself. If you get webhosting from a real hosting company, its more cheaper and you are getting a more powerful/faster server and it comes with the support.
