like what you said, man is like a cup of liquid taken from a body of water (god). since the water (man) is placed in a cup (flesh), there is an illusion of separateness. the flesh has an egoic mind which creates all kinds of thoughts and emotions to reinforce the division, creating an entity or an individual. since it is limited by the cup, the water associates itself and derives its sense of self with the cup and forgets that it is a part of a body of water. to destroy the illusion, one must remember its connectedness/oneness with god (water). to do that, one must be aware of that we are not the body, the thoughts and the egoic mind (cup). awareness is a state of remembrance of what one is beyond the seeming boundary or limitation of the flesh.

as for me, i think it's a notion that puts man on a pedestal, that he is separate from nature. And this type of dominant mentality is actually what's destroying our planet. We are part of nature, we came from nature. This "divinity" within us is only OUR potential as a specie and i think cannot be attained individually or within a religious group. It's only after the species as a whole realizes its potential that we start walking the path to divinity. this divinity is not static either, it is a continuous progression by one generation after another. I also don't think it can be tapped by meditating or praying, but by accumulating as much information as you can on the world around you.
