JAPETH RECONSIDERS, WILL SIGN & PLAY FOR WHOPPERS

    Fri, 10/09/2009

In the end, Japeth Aguilar is honoring a commitment to play for Burger King, prevailed upon to sign up with the Whoppers on the intervention of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan.

"Words of wisdom from Mr. MVP were needed for the Aguilars to realize that they have to settle their problem with Burger King," said BK top honcho and PBA board chairman Lito Alvarez.

"We talked to Japeth, his agent Ronnie Nathanielsz, his sister and an aunt for hours and nothing happened. I'm grateful to Mr. MVP he intervened. He showed his sincerity he really wanted to help," Alvarez added.

Alvarez said Pangilinan personally talked to Japeth's US-based father Peter in an overseas call, convincing the family to reconsider their decision.

Before the talk between Pangilinan and the older Aguilar, the Aguilar camp was firm on its decision to abandon Burger King and instead play for the Smart Gilas team being prepared to compete in the 2011 Fiba Asia championship.

The Aguilars finally reconsidered Friday, agreeing to sign up with the team that made Japeth the No. 1 pick in the most recent PBA Rookie Draft.

Alvarez said they have worked on Aguilar's GAB (Games and Amusements Board) license, allowing him to play in the Burger King-Purefoods tiff Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum to kick off the 35th PBA season.

"It's designed to be a battle featuring the first two picks. It will materialize," said Alvarez of the match to be marked by the pro debuts of first pick Aguilar and second pick Rico Maierhoffer of the TJ Giants.

The Whoppers will have a special practice session at the Reyes Gym Saturday morning to be attended by Aguilar.

Afterwards, the two parties formally sign a contract then hold a press conference.

"He settled for a one-year contract. It's a done deal. We'll discuss the other details tomorrow (Saturday)," said Alvarez.

"The most important thing is that he finally agreed to sign a contract. That's a big concern not only for me but the team, the PBA board and the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas). With this development, we've eliminated possible irritants," Alvarez added.

Among the things to be discussed by the two parties Saturday is the ticklish issue of Aguilar's participation with both his mother club in the PBA and the Smart Gilas team.

"I'm allowing him that and I think the PBA board won't step on the way. But to be sure that there's no problem, we're inviting the commissioner (Sonny Barrios) in the press conference," said Alvarez. (SB)
