If you want not to be limited or you want more flexibility, you should learn C/C++ aside from interpreted languages such Java, C#, Python, etc.

Delphi is SURE not dead... you have no idea what you are talking about.
    There's now even 2010 version.
I do programming for a living, and ALL of my US clients want them in delphi, because a) they are stand-alone exe, and b) they can be fast developed.

Maybe in the Philippines, but not in other countries.
Even in Manila are many delphi programmer.

Time is money, what do you think a client will purchase, a program which takes 6 month to develop because its is C and he has to pay 6 month or the same program developed in a month with delphi?

@TS Try na lang Java because it can be used as a Web Application or a Desktop Application.

@softtouch, Maybe you are talking about Business Application here, targeting Microsoft windows., IMHO, you cannot fully compare delphi, especially when it comes to computing, engineering designs, PLC devices, mobile programming, web technology and more...

@Readers, Let me just say that Delphi is good enough to do small-medium size business/database applications.

but when you talk about Enterprise system, such as ERP, it is mostly done in JAVA and C#, I was even worried that I might be replaced . Nowadays, I think, it is between JAVA and C# competetion, because there are plenty of tools, more than you can ever imagine that may help you to build C# and JAVA application in much wider variety, of application.

But, Delphi would not be dead...it's not because there are still programmers who can code, but there are millions of small-medium size company, that needs plain, simple, straightforward, adoptable, manageable, business application on which Delphi & its programmer can take care of...

I got an opportunity that made me to study C/C++/Python, why would you consider me to study C#/JAVA/DELPHI where I already had the chance to earn some money. Anyway, the experience will still carry on as soon as you will be working on other language.

so try to grab which you think you can earn some cash or whatsoever opportunity may comes.

@TS, for the sake of your topic, (which you no longer visit LOL) i voted DELPHI, especially to those who want to start experimenting OOP.JAVA is already a product of OOP, and its already implemented from the very start you write a code.

oh oh ... here we go again ... PL flame war might erupt ... anyway as for the original poster ... why wont you try both .. kay depende ra jud na sa user if adaptable / comfortable ba cya sa development style of each PL ... I really suggest give yourself a test drive on both PL para you yourself can compare and evalute...

Exactly. Just try both and decide.

I can speak only of my own experience.
Because I am doing programming since the 80's/90's, did almost any kind of software, from games to drivers to applications, and do this for a living, I selected a language which was easy to learn, and allowed me to finish products very quick. Because I do this for a living, products had to developed as quick as possible, and the only language I could use for this as Delphi.
But that are just my experience. I am not working for anybody (and never did), and my clients are not in the Philippines, so you might all be right with Java related to the Philippines.
