aloha lola, we call that battle scars... my gf slashed her cheek last sunday at calicoan courtesy of the board's fin.. tsk tsk

calicoan aint that good this month.. on shore winds, low tide, and waves break inconsistently. they call it washing machine.. hehe.. i managed only to catch a wave once but feared for my life riding it coz i can see the rock bottom already... ouch!

after an hour, we called it a day and ate lots of seafood instead...

a shot of the inconsistent breaks...

    2 more weeks to go...

i got another good news by the way, i got to talk to somebody who owns a beach house in argao and he told me there's good waves in there during summer. the big waves in argao are brought about by shifting currents not really wind. and he told me he can sometimes see surfers in there... so i still have my hopes up.

maka surf gyud ta dinhi sa cebu bro if ever naa gyud.

anybody can check out the place?

    Koykoy,

The right season for Calicoan is June to October.Â* At this time of the year (April) the winds are mostly onshore and the waves won't work.Â* However, around April 1 the wind shifted from northeast to southeast and blew across the wave face.Â* The waves were beautifully shaped then.

ABCD Beach, where you surfed, is dangerous if you aren't familiar with it.Â* First of all are the rocks, as you mentioned.Â* Secondly, there is a riptide in the middle of the beach.Â* If you are an experienced surfer, you would use that riptide to bring you back out, then paddle off to the side to get to the point where you can catch a wave.Â* To inexperienced swimmers or surfers, however, the riptide is a cause for alarm.Â* When people realize they are rapidly being brought out to sea, they struggle against the current and end up exhausting themselves in the process (you cannot swim against a riptide).Â* The proper way to handle a riptide, if you wish to leave its clutches, is to swim to the side.Â* Many people have had to be rescued off ABCD by the locals. Casual swimmers who don't know what they're getting themselves into, or surfers from other areas who just jump into the water without examining how the waves break (the riptide area can clearly be seen by the experienced eye).Â*

I would suggest, to people who wish to surf ABCD, that they talk first to one of the locals.Â* There is an Australian living on the beach, Rodney Waldeck, who body surfs every day.Â* He's a great resource person for how to handle the local conditions.Â* He can be found at "Myoho Surf Huts," a sort-of-resort.Â*

Try again in July. Monitor the Pacific for typhoons brewing in the Micronesias and moving towards the northern Philippines or Japan. Within days you are bound to get fantastic waves in Calicoan. Double overhead is not an impossibility.

Check out the videos section at www.calicoansurfcamp.com if you want to know what the waves are like when they're working. Or take a peek at the Surf Camp advertisement on RCTV Channel 36, which shows a few seconds' worth of surfing footage.

Thanks for the info bro Tarmac...

Yah, one of our lookouts at ABCD inform me that there is a rip on the left side of ABCD beach (when you're facing the beach), so I make sure that I would stay in front of the beach. Well, Atty Go (the surfcamp's owner) informed me beforehand that the on-shore winds make the waves unsurfable. I still went out though because my other half really wanted to try how it feels in the midst of the waves. Well, what the heck, we were already there after 10 hours of travelling so might as well make the most out of it.

Maybe we can schedule in July there.

"MYOHO SURF HUTS"? Where is that located? I wish their rates are lower. Villas at surfcamp cost at least $140.. OUch...

Shoeless Rebel: hehe... excited na jud? I have a trip to Samal Island this 29th. Is it near Lanuza ba?

aquafire: i have to verify that bro... there might be huge waves there but it might not be surfable. m still have my hopes up though. if its shifting surrents then i dont think it's surfable but it is still worth a try. plus expect rips.

tarmac: thanks alot for the info bro! yeah u have to swim across a rip instead of against it... u might get exhausted and ends up far out in the ocean. hehehe... thanks for the tips!

koykoy: m not sure about samal island bro. i've heard of that place but m not sure if it's in the surigao area... i think it's in davao. yeah excited na kaayo mi... hahay. may ta i'll have better luck than u guys sa calicoan. m hoping naa waves didto karon off season ra ba gyud.
