Malilong: Will the Duranos bite?
Saturday, September 12, 2009
WHO would have thought that the day would come when we see the Osmeñas trying mightily to persuade a Durano to run for Cebu governor, offering him their unqualified support?
The two families used to be bitter political enemies. They so hated each other’s guts that it was nearly impossible to find them on the same side of any issue or election. The Freeman’s Juanito Jabat once told us about an incident in which the late Ramon Durano Sr. refused to be interviewed until Nito told him what Sergio Osmena Jr., now also deceased, had said. It was as if a faucet was opened, Nito recalled. Words poured out of the Durano patriarch’s mouth in a torrent.
During that time, Durano ruled over half of the island in alliance with the congressmen of the old sixth and seventh districts. The other half belonged to Osmeña, whose candidates regularly swept the elections in Cebu City as well as in the province.
No ‘Amon made several attempts to break Osmeña’s stranglehold of the Capitol, at one time fielding his own wife, Beatriz, for governor. Serging, however, thwarted him each time. Interestingly, a prominent member of Durano’s team in almost all those losing political battles was a brilliant lawyer named Pablo Garcia.
Garcia would later succeed where his mentor failed, getting himself elected to three consecutive terms as governor, thanks in no small measure to one of Serging’s nephews, Lito. Once in power, the Garcias went on their own to become the new political force to reckon with locally while marginalizing Lito’s, and for that matter, the Osmenas’ influence in Cebu provincial politics.
The development must have unsettled and continues to unsettle the Osmeñas. Here is a family who they once must have considered as a fringe player in local politics, emerging as the new power brokers in the island. Order has to be restored, their old dominion returned.
But they know they couldn’t do it on their own so they’re seeking an alliance with an old foe. Will the Duranos bite?
Talks about a possible run for the governorship by Tourism Secretary Ace Durano had been circulating for some time but it was former senator Sonny Osmeña who first advocated it publicly. The other day, Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña went one step farther by offering one of his councilors, Jun-Jun Davide, as Durano’s running mate.
A Durano-Davide tandem would be formidable. Both are young, well-educated (Ace finished law in Ateneo de Manila, Jun-Jun in the University of the Philippines), soft-spoken and unassuming. Neither had been linked to any scandal or wrongdoing. Even their places of origin make for an ideal (north-south) combination.
Davide is open to the idea “if only for the purpose of uniting Cebu City and the Province,” according to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday. That means, yes, he is running, but with qualifications.
Durano, on the other hand, hasn’t been as forthright. The last and only time I asked for his comment, he simply said, it’s only a rumor. Well, the rumor is getting stronger every day but it is still a rumor.
So are we ever going to see the descendants of Ramon Durano and Sergio Osmeña Jr., who in their lifetime couldn’t agree with each other on anything, share the same stage and make the same campaign pitch?
Nothing is impossible in politics.

will the duranos and osmenas join forces? abangan sa susunod na kabanata....
kung sa katigulangan pa na, imposible kaau na mahitabo given the long-standing, bitter political rivalry between the Osmenas and the Duranos.
but given the circumstances now, it is never impossible.
pero may I ask, wala na ba diay laing choices other than the two? how about Tomas for governor? hehe
how about a Martinez, a Yapha, a Cuenco, a Del Mar, etc?
