Coke lends 2 Tigers to Bulls

    Wednesday, September 02, 2009 3:13:00 AM

In an effort to help a Philippine Basketball Association team currently facing financial problems, Coca-Cola board representative JB Baylon disclosed that the Tigers will lend two of its players to the Barako Bull and even pay their salaries.

The players are Aries Dimaunahan and Manuel Caceres.

"Since Cola-Cola has an excess of players, who will be benched anyway, we gave them to Red Bull. But since they are still under contract, we will be paying their salaries until the end of their contract in July next year, which in effect, is one season," Baylon told Inside Sports|, Standard Today and Viva Sports.

The Coca-Cola governor and team manager said Dimaunahan played for Barako Bulls' coach Leo Isaac in the past, while Caceres is a good young man, who didn't get the playing time he deserved.

"I think they will be able to get their playing time with Barako Bulls," said Baylon, who conceded the move would be a considerable savings for the Barako Bull franchise.

"While we pay your salary, you better play as Barako Bulls, especially when you're playing against us because you have to demonstrate that if the Barako Bulls are bought by a new owner, you have to demonstrate that you are worth being a player there," said the Coke official. DENOK GOES TO SAN MIGUEL

In a move seen as preparation for the impending exit of veteran point guard Olsen Racela, San Miguel Beer loaded its backcourt some more with its acquisition of hard-nosed Sta. Lucia playmaker Denok Miranda.

The Beermen acquired Miranda from the Realtors in exchange for their 2012 first round draft pick.

"In a way, pwedeng sabihing preparation namin ito for Olsen's retirement. Pero medyo matagal pa yon. Pinapakita pa rin ni Olsen na kaya pa niyang maglaro," said San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen.

"Medyo overloaded na kami sa point, pero pwede pa rin gamitin lahat yan. It's just some of them have to sacrifice minutes," Tanquingcen added. "Pero matagal pa rin naman ang opening ng season. Baka meron pa rin movements. It's up to management."

San Miguel has a solid backcourt that also features Mike Cortez, Jonas Villanueva and Bonbon Custodio.

On his transfer to San Miguel, Miranda has been reunited with former FEU teammates Villanueva and Arwind Santos. The three also used to play together in San Miguel's farm team in the PBL.

Santos landed at San Miguel earlier in a trade for Ken Bono.

Bono had a brief layover at Burger King before ending up with Coca-Cola.

Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez understands their management gave up Miranda due to salary cap constraints.

"It hurts to see Denok go. He's one of the cornerstones of our team and losing him is a hard pill to swallow," said Fernandez. "I will surely miss Denok but I'm also happy that he's with San Miguel."

On Miranda's departure, Ryan Reyes and free agent recruits Josh Urbiztondo and Chris Pacana were left to man the backcourt for SLR. (NC)

    Espino leaving Realtors for Coke

    Friday, September 04, 2009 3:09:00 AM | 6 Comments
Six-foot-6 center Dennis Espino, the cornerstone of the Sta. Lucia team for over a decade now, is leaving the Realtors to join the Coca-Cola Tigers in the next few days.

A reliable source said Coca-Cola and Sta. Lucia are now finalizing their transaction for the transfer of Espino to the Tigers camp where he will be reunited with former teammates Kenneth Duremdes, Gerard Francisco and Alex Cabagnot among others.

The same source said Espino had had a meeting with Coca-Cola top official JB Baylon before leaving the country with his wife yesterday for a brief vacation in Spain.

Espino, the league's top draft pick in 1995, has been considered among the finest big men ever to play in the league.

In playing his 15th season with the Realtors in the 2008-09 PBA campaign, the former UST main man moved up to No. 23 overall (with 8,298 points) in the all-time scoring ladder and to No. 15 (with 4,094) in all-time rebounding list at the end of this campaign.

In the course of the season, he got past Bong Hawkins (823, Rudy Distrito (8074), and Ato Agustin (7979) in scoring and past Alvin Teng (3981) in rebounds.

After playing under the shadows of Jun Limpot in his early years in the pros, Espino took over the baton and has since become the team's heart and soul.

Espino powered SLR to two championships and twice earned a spot in the league's Mythical Selection as a Realtor. He's also made the All-Defensive Team twice and bagged the MVP Finals honors in their 2007-08 Philippine Cup conquest.

At Coca-Cola, he'll be playing under Duremdes, a former teammate at Sta. Lucia and also with the national team in several international tournaments.

In giving away Espino, SLR is to get a future draft pick. Likely to be added to the mix is Coca-Cola reserve forward Jason Misolas.

At Coca-Cola, Espino will alternate with Asi Taulava at center spot.

The Tigers have been on an aggressive rebuilding process. They have earlier acquired rookie draftees Chris Ross and Francis Allera and veterans Ken Bono, Norman Gonzales and Larry Rodriguez. Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

    Espino now a Tiger

    Friday, September 04, 2009 3:11:00 AM | 14 Comments
Dennis Espino was known as a Tiger during his playing years in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines while playing for University of Santo Tomas.

After 14 seasons playing as a Sta. Lucia Realtor, Espino is expected to wind up as the newest Tiger of Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola assistant coach Bo Perasol confirmed to Standard Today that they have already agreed with the Realtors in principle regarding the transfer of one of the best center/forwards the league has ever produced.

"Konting ayos na lang," said Perasol in a telephone interview. "Wala pa si Dennis sa Manila, but we have already agreed in principle with Sta. Lucia."

Espino was dealt to the Tigers in exchange for Jason Misolas and a future first-round pick.

The former national team standout's entry will certainly make the Coca-Cola frontline more formidable as he will team up with fellow veteran Asi Taulava, promising third-year pro Ken Bono and hardworking forward Larry Rodriguez.

By adding another experienced player into their lineup, Perasol knows they have to work double time on the conditioning process of their frontliners.

"Nasa sa kanila naman 'yan on how they can live up to our team's new philosophy, which is to run more," said Perasol. "Kaila*ngan talagang magpa-kundisyon sila. Our idea is to have both Asi and Dennis together at the same time dahil sayang naman 'yung talent nila kung magpapalitan lang sila." Rey Joble - Manila Standard Today
