Carlo J. Caparas to run for senator?
Manila Bulletin
Manila Bulletin - Thursday, August 27
The way things are, especially with the filing of a TRO with the Supreme Court by the country's National Artists and their supporters in protest of four of the newly proclaimed National Artists, Carlo J. Caparas who feels the most beleaguered and insulted, may throw his hat into the political arena. He might run for senator.
He wants his name vindicated, he said. He wants to show that even someone from among the "little people" can rise up to where the elites are. "Gusto kong ipakita na ang isang nasa ibaba ay pwedeng gumanti sa mga nang-aapi sa kanya sa pamamaraang malinis na pulitika."
The multi-awarded novelist-director added: "They are forcing me to run for a political post, mapipilitan siguro ako because of what they are doing, na parang walang karapatan ang isang galing sa masa na katulad ko na maging National Artist," Carlo expressed during the recent press conference held at Astor Hotel along Makati Ave. for his latest film work, "Pangarap Kong Jackpot Trilogy" The People's Champ Manny Pacquiao stars in one of the trilogies, "Sa Ngalan ng Busabos." Manny said Carlo, with all his achievements, is deserving to be a National Artist for Visual Arts and Film.
"No matter what they say against Direk Carlo, na Komiks King bago naging magaling na director sa pelikula, naniniwala ako na karapatdapat siyang maging National Artist. Bilib ako sa galing at talino niya. Tinanggap ko ang project na ito dahil I cannot say no to Direk Carlo and his wife Donna Villa," Manny added.
Carlo didn't elaborate on his political plans because at the moment, he'd rather focus on his film "Pangarap Kong Jackpot Trilogy," which is PCSO's 75th anniversary treat to the people who've been supporting Sweepstakes and Lotto. Actually, this movie is the true-story of Lotto and Sweepstakes winners. Directing the trilogy with Carlo is another noted film-TV director, Toto Natividad, who has nothing but praises for Carlo.
Toto directed Carlo's "Pieta" which was made into a teleserye by ABS-CBN. "Direk Carlo is a meticulous worker. He always aspires for perfection," Toto said.
Manny as next drama king?
With his role in "Sa Ngalan ng Busabos," Manny is being molded by Direk Carlo to be the next drama king. "Talagang dramatic kasi ang role ni Manny sa episode niya," Carlo said. "Tumakas siya sa orphanage where he grew up to look for love - from family, parents, brothers and sisters. Sa paghahanap niya ng pagmamahal, marami siyang pagdadaanang hirap."
He added: "You have seen Manny Pacquiao the boxer, now you'll see Manny Pacquiao the dramatic actor. Our kababayans will be surprised to see a different Manny Pacquiao this time. Our Champ can surely act."
Carlo's film producer wife Donna, said the movie is their humble share in national efforts to revive the moribund Filipino film industry. Also in the movie are the Caparas' talented children CJ and Peach who agreed to appear in a film for the first time.
"We hope to do our part in bringing back the glorious days of Philippine cinema. We owe our success to the Filipino moviegoers," Donna said. Carlo and Donna have worked together in many film projects in the past, chalking up a series of blockbusters.
In his directorial comeback, Direk Carlo assembled a stellar cast of film actors and showbiz personalities that could entice moviegoers to pack theaters once more. Aside from Manny Pacquiao, the movie also stars veterans Eddie Garcia, Gina Pareño, Caridad Sanchez, Tommy Abuel, Joel Torre and Pen Medina, together with rising young stars Jake Cuenca, Mark Herras, Baron Geisler and Megan Young.
Jake Cuenca (of "Tayong Dalawa" fame) and Megan Young topbill the episode "Hawak Kita, Hawak Mo Ko," while Eddie Garcia stars in "Hiwaga ni Lolo Hugo."
About Jake, Direk Carlo said, "he is a serious actor who is very good at both drama and action. This kid will definitely go places someday. In fact, all the young stars in this movie have proven their mettle in acting. I just hope that they would be given more projects in the future for them to further hone their craft."
Donna and Carlo thank PCSO for supporting their new project, saying the agency helped a lot in the research of materials used in the development of the stories used in the film. The movie is part of PCSO's year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary this September.
