I am very much impressed with our first overclocking experience with a retail version of Intel’s Core i5-750. Keep in mind that we wanted to show you air cooled results here but did not have the proper mounting brackets for our Thermalright TRUE cooler. This lack of pressure on our mating surfaces surely could have impacted our results. I do however have no problem suggesting that with a little BIOS tweaking and maturation, and good cooling, that many of you will be seeing fully 100% load stability at 4.2GHz and possibly even 4.4GHz on air with the Intel Core i5-750.

what are you talking about? Core i5 is 45nm, Core i7 is 45nm . the socket count is a bit smaller than the Core i7 because the i5 doesn't support QPI but still has the memory controller integrated in the processor which is why it has more pins than the 775.

From what we have seen here and from what we saw in our most recent Real World Gameplay CPU Scaling article, HyperThreading needs in real gaming situations are minimal. For the most part, CPU frequency is still the most important factor way out in front of HyperThreading or memory bandwidth. Albeit, a dual core base level of computing is becoming the norm in gaming now. In most respects we are GPU limited way before CPU bottlenecks crop up.

The Intel Core i5-750 in our preview looks to be a tremendously worthy enthusiast part even if Intel is labeling it "mainstream." You guys know as well as I do that the true enthusiast parts always have been the mainstream or low-end dwellers anyway. Some upcoming Core i5 models are said to be featuring HyperThreading, but given the pricing structure and performance shown by the i5-750, I have to think that a lot of my overclocking brothers will be migrating to the i5-750.

MSI and ASUS look to have very promising motherboards in the GD-80 and P7P55D that are worth putting on your short list of LGA 1156 boards already. Both companies' motherboards have done great in our testing, and believe it or not, MSI has produced the best LGA 1156 motherboard we have seen yet.

sa multimedia benches, lower is better na bai. well, wala kaayo ko good explanation but i know this for a fact; ang edge lang sa i7 over the core 2 processors is memory bandwidth and memory latency because the memory controller is already integrated to the processor but clock for clock versus core 2s, there are some benchies that basically same ra ug result between core 2 and core i7 basta dili kaayo mag require ug intensive memory bandwidth and the benchmark is solely focused on the processor alone which could be the reason why the i5 is really close to the i7 kay and wala niya, triple channel raman.

the i5 is a the mainstream counterpart sa i7. the i7 will become the high-end, i5 will become mainstream and the core 2s will eventually become the entry levels and will be known as i3(s) if i'm not mistaken. they do not have the same socket, i7 is LGA1366 (land grid array) while i5 is LGA1156. the i5 has smaller pin count because it loses QPI and uses DMA to connect the processor to the rest of the components.

I wanted a faster rig than my current E6420-based setup....so my question: Is the i5 worth saving for this Christmas epecially with its very expensive ddr3 mems? Or should I just wait for Intel quad cores to drop in price?

I'm currently planning on having either Ubuntu and maybe Windows 7 as the operating systems of choice for this Christmas rig of mine. Its mostly gonna be used for my work which involves multi-tasking, and maybe some gaming on the side. :P

BTW...I'm not that hard core with my hardware. In fact I don't even overclock.

i5 is definitely the way to go... it will be cheaper than their enthusiast procs which are the i7... don't when they'll be available locally though... if you are not overclocking bro, better get a processor which has high stock frequencies... and don't forget not to depend on overclocking results... look for stock frequency tests...
