its the entry or point of entry to the network.

your isp assigns you an ip dynamically/statically to what node you are connected. each of those ip has corresponding gateway. you can get your gateway from your modem; or in your computer's network properties(if the routing configuration is dynamic or pure bridging); or through typing ipconfig in the command prompt(if the routing configuration is dynamic or pure bridging); or from your standalone router(if you are using one). usually it ends up with digit number 1.

hehehehe what i use back in iligan to monitor my wireless clients in my neighborhood is alertping... it continuously ping the ip of my clients.. and also my isp.. so i can see if it drops or not.. really simple program.. i use this program to the clients that is about 247meters away from my main ap.. just monitoring the connection..

in your case, use this to ping your isp gateway... to monitor if you still have connectivity...
