Yup, The Man was here. And the planes he flew were the very same ones that were displayed at the Paris and Farnborough airshows the previous couple of years, namely "388 Blue" and "389 Blue". I watched the flight display for three days straight. One time he forgot to retract the landing gear after takeoff and did half of his display in dirty configuration (the Flanker went into an effortless vertical climb right after takeoff, seguing into an Immelmann, as if it didn't know the extra drag was there). It was very, very impressive.
And of course he did the trademark Cobra. Also tailslides (something American fighters couldn't do without stalling their engine compressors)
At some point I found myself standing three feet away from Pugachev. I wanted to ask him for his autograph pero na-shy ko.
At the time the Russians thought they could sell us fighter jets because the PAF was seeking to re-equip its fighter squardrons. They returned in 1993 for the same reason. Pero di man musugot atong American puppet masters.
(Fast forward 18 years and instead of re-equipping its fighter squadrons, nag decommission nuon. Ang modernization funds nag evaporate. Pathetic)
At the time the Russians hadn't commissioned their GLONASS system yet. They had to use an off-the-shelf US-made Trimble GPS, nakapatong lang sa glareshield beside the HUD. It was the only piece of avionics onboard that had English wording. Everything else had Cyrillic characters.
I found this video on YouTube, where Pugachev demonstrates 389 on a goodwill visit to the West:
