Nice of you to start a recommendations thread. And I do enjoy it if people can stop by and recommend those comic books who's stories they really enjoyed.

So what I'd ask you guys to do is if you want to recommend something here, at least give a short paragraph or so about what the books is about and why you like it. Also tell them where they should start, how many books are in the series and such. Post images from the book, too.

Let me just add that I think it's important to pitch books to people, tell them what they're about instead of just giving them a title. Show some artwork That way, they can judge for themselves a little better. Cause let's face it, there's a LOT of books out there we could all recommend.

    enjoy!

Ok let me add my personal favorite
    Marvel Knights Black Panther#1-62

by Christopher Priest, Mark Texeira, Sal Velluto, and Bob Almond(Marvel Comics)

Now let me start with the question:

Who the hell is Black Panther?

Â* Â*Making his first appearance in Fantastic Four# 52, the Black Panther aka T'Challa, the king of a fictional "technologically advanced" African nation named Wakanda. His powers are similar to Captain America's wherein all of his physical attributes and senses are augmented to reach "peak human" capacity which was obtained with the ingestion of a special Wakanadan herb that can only be used by those of the royal Wakandan bloodline. He is also a genius level inventor that awed Mr. Fantastic in their first encounter. (He is the inventor of the Quinjet the Avengers use). He later joined the Avengers and even created an identity as a school teacher in Brooklyn during his tenure.

    Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â*

    Why this series rocks:

Â* Â*The amazing thing about Priest's run is that he truly understood the character of the Panther, in which he knew that comic book readers would have a hard time relating to a mysterious character with no super powers, a king of some country they hardly know about, and who is a black "superhero" that will not sell kindly to readers. This was the guy in the back of the Avengers class photo, whose main job was to point and cry out, "Look— A BIG, SCALY MONSTER! THOR— GO GET HIM!!! With racial divide in mind, instead of changing Panther's character to appeal more to readers Priest introduced supporting characters whom the readers could identify with and through them, identify the Panther through their "everyman's" eyes. Panther was always this silent and secretive character that it wouldn't bring any interest to the readers if they could see/read what the Panther was always thinking in "thought balloons". So instead Priest used the supporting characters to be Black Panther's voice to the readers maintaining the Panther's sense of enigma.

Â* Â*Priest brought back Panther to his roots like when he was first introduced in Fantastic Four, a king of an African nation whos advanced technology can pose a threat to U.S. security, and also an inventor/ scientist that equaled the geniuses of Reed Richards, Dr. Doom, and Tony Stark (Wakanda has a Galactus contingency plan which Panther devised on his own fer Chrissakes). He also brought back old villains of the Panther and also introduced seemingly new ones that rivaled the Panther's scale of power and intelligence. Priest also ups the notch in the political aspect that the previous series has failed to flesh out. He delves into the inner workings Wakanda's tribes and their society (Wakandans are apparently xenophobes) and there is all manner of global and domestic and racial politics involved in this series. This also made Dr. Doom, Sub Mariner, Magneto and Blackbolt his supporting
characters as this series was now thrust into a global scenery where nations of super-humans, mutants, and atlanteans existed.

Â* Â*His Black Panther was cunning, deceptive, manipulative, always 6 steps ahead and had agendas that were on a global scale (which strained his relationship with Iron Man). Even the U.S. is planning against Wakanda since virtually nobody knows their capabilities (Only a few foreign individuals have ever set foot in Wakanda). Priest even managed to answer plotholes on why he joined the Avengers in which the result created a rift in their relationship.
Â* Â*What made this series more exciting was knowing that the actions of the Black Panther were always backed by the thought that if he failed, Wakanda also loses in the process.

Â* Â*And while this series had more political twist and turns, It didnt shy away with action and good old superhero fighting. Panther shined with fights against Iron man, Iron fist, the White Wolf, Killmonger, and even against Mephisto himself. But one must remember that this series calls for Panther to be king, so in a sense, be a diplomat, a chess player. This in turn brings action in the form of words as world leaders (like Doom, Magneto, et others) talk politics (in the sense that its full of tension and conflict) that could lead to peace or war. But when it came for Panther to use those fists, boy does Priest deliver. And he does so in a manner that makes readers jump off the couch saying "Whoa! That didn't just happen!"
    Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â*Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â*

Â* This series is worthy of attention as it propelled Black Panther as one of Marvel's heavy-hitters character wise. And while some may say that he is just some rip from DC's Batman, take note that when Batman was still shown in the campy 60's show (with POW effects to add), Panther debuted at the same time by taking down the Fantastic Four by himself, using gadgets that were out of this world which Batman at present can seemingly pull out of his utility belt for no reason.

I recommend my 2nd favorite comic series! (Hellboy is the first)

Powers is a comic book series by writer Brian Michael Bendis, artist Michael Avon Oeming and colorist Pat Garrehy.

Powers is set in a world where superpowers are relatively common, but not mundane. It follows two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, police officers in a homicide department devoted to cases that involve "Powers" (people with superpowers). Walker himself used to be a costumed superhero under the name Diamond, becoming a police officer after he lost his superpowers. However, he still leverages his contacts in the superhero community in his everyday job, even becoming engaged to an ex co-worker who is later on killed.

Through the various cases Walker and Pilgrim investigate, Powers delves into the seediest aspects of the superpowered lifestyle: deranged stalkers, groupies, government conspiracies, drug abuse, sexual kinks, petty scams and genocidal delusions of grandeur.

Gradually, it becomes evident that the relationship between Powers and regular people isn't wholly benign, and that opposition to the superbeings is approaching a critical point. When the most powerful of the Powers goes insane and wreaks global destruction, the President declares a ban on superpower activity.

At this point the series jumped back to tell the story of how the Powers came to be, and the origin of Detective Walker, in an arc that raised as many questions as it answered.

Most recently, the series has focused on the secrets of Walker and Pilgrim as well as their growing role in lives of some powers.

And of course, my favorite series (latest mini is Hellboy Makoma, and a new series coming this September!)

Hellboy debuted in 1993 in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (Dark Horse Comics). Written and drawn by creator Mike Mignola, the stories have a flavor of supernatural adventure with a dark mood embodied by Mignola's unique sense of design (which may be characterized by Mignola's incisive linework, and his distinctive balance of heavy shadows and pure colors).

Mignola's stories are heavily influenced by, and have been dedicated to, H. P. Lovecraft, Jack Kirby, Edgar Allan Poe, and other authors. Horror stories of the Weird Tales variety are another important influence. Writer Robert Bloch has praised Hellboy as one of the most innovative and entertaining comics in recent years. Certain Hellboy stories also draw on folklore from Ireland, Norway, Russia, Malaysia, and Japan, among other countries.

It's rocks because of it's heavy folkore and literary references. It's intelligent, smart, funny, and creepy all at the same time. Mignola remains one of my favorite artists and writers.

if you are a marvel comic fan i would recommend the house of m stoyline. planet hulk and also the upcoming civil war cross over. because after civil war marvel universe will change forever and daghan sad marvel character mamtay on that x-over. but thats just the beginning because next year when the hulk return to earth there would be a different hulk. my guess is that marvel is trying to transform the hulk into maestro, the future hulk that kills most of marvel superheroes.
