i read some reviews about the movie. and here's one i found quite interesting.

What prevents “Hostel” from fully harnessing the suspense factor in its rising action, climax, and conflict resolution is the insufficient impetus to pity or to feel too badly for Paxton and Josh. Before the film depicts them as insufferable Americans, it presents them as bothersome individuals. There is no crime in wanting a good time, but there is no sympathy for shouting “yeah, f__k you” to people essentially hosting their adventures. Furthermore, points for good behavior are only awarded to Americans who can speak a foreign language.

Those with weak stomachs, stay home for this one. Remember that scene in Reservoir Dogs where the guy gets his ear cut off? Right before it happens the camera pans away and all we get is the screaming. Hostel will do no such thing. It will let you watch. Dogs gets the mention because Tarantino takes producer credits here, while the film is written and directed by Eli Roth.

It is being marketed as a horror film. And indeed horror is about showing us something frightening, something that could conceivably happen to us. However, while most horror dwells on implicit threat and dark mood, Hostel decides to go the slasher route and push it to its R-18 limits. In that sense it isn't really horror, but more of a gore flick that has us writhing in our seats watching some of the sickest scenes we will ever come across.

Hostel starts off with a group of guys, two American, one European, who are backpacking through Europe and partying in Amsterdam. They are out to have the time of their lives. Some guy tells them the best action is in Slovakia, and they head off.

That's where things go awry. Supposedly based on an amalgam of true events, the boys are brought to a place where people pay to torture and kill. This set-up opens the floodgates for the gory scenes that the trailers promise.

The thing is, it's never a lurking evil, a cerebral evil that attacks. It is a lot of blood. We've seen this gratuitous amount of blood in say, the Saw movies. But there was a method and madness behind that. Here, we get rich thrill-seekers looking for a rush. This kind of set-up is as old as a Van Damme movie like Hard Target.

Where it could have raised questions of moral ambiguity to give it more texture, Hostel instead concentrates on showing us sick things. Not to say that this isn't disturbing. Coming away from the theater, one does come to question one's capacity to watch such torment being perpetrated, even if it is only a movie.

And Hostel, despite not having any cerebral weight, is admittedly entertaining. Those of you who can't get enough gore may find yourselves sated by what you'll see in Hostel . The story is pretty simple, and it serves as a neat reason to go doing some gory stuff. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are good, and the bad guys get their comeuppance, even if it comes in the form of an absurd vehicular accident.

Some have touted Hostel as a work of genius. This reviewer isn't inclined to agree. It is a competent slasher flick which will show you some things you wish you never saw. Aside from the gore, there's not much memorable about it. Though it's not fair to look for something that's not there, it would have been more interesting if the film actually explored the psychologies of the people who would pay to torture and kill, instead of leaving them one-dimensional rich freaks who need a rush.

That said, Hostel delivers what it promises. It seems the next stage in the teen slasher flick. Instead of American teens being the victims of some madman in the woods because they decided to make out in their car, we now have American backpackers being punished because they went looking for some hot *** in Europe. Up for some blood and gore and some edge of your seat screaming, "Run, run, don't go in there, not that room!" and the complementary squeals and shudders? Hostel's got your ticket.
