Smart Gilas wants to help Barako Bull

FORMER Philippine Basketball Association chairman Ricky Vargas said his “off the cuff” offer to the PBA board of governors to help tide over the problems faced by Red Bull Barako due to the financial difficulties of the Photokina franchise was made in good faith and in response to an appeal by Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia Realty that the league should help teams in trouble.

The creative solution broached by Vargas was for the Smart Gilas national team, coached by Rakjo Toroman, to take the place of Red Bull for the forthcoming season. And since co-branding has been approved, he suggested that the league allow the Barako Bull logo to be placed on the back of the Smart Gilas team jerseys.

In this way, Photokina would not have to spend on maintaining a team until it hopefully recovers from its present predicament where the salaries of players and the coaching staff have been in arrears. “This will not merely help Red Bull, more importantly it will help the PBA,” said Vargas. “This is because Smart Gilas will be a competitive team out to win and since it will represent the Philippines in next year’s London Olympic qualifier will be an attraction.”

Vargas said that if this is not feasible. at least he tried to find a solution to a situation that is bound to hurt the league which often prides itself on the competitive balance of its teams.

Under the proposal, all Smart Gilas games will be counted just as they were when the Northern Consolidated team played as a guest team in the PBA and ended its stint by winning the import reinforced conference, sweeping Manila Beer, anchored by Michael Young and Harold Keeling in 1985. New PBA chairman seeks major changes

MANILA, Philippines - Air21 president Lito Alvarez will push for a league expansion, creation of a PBA developmental league and change in league structure when he assumes the PBA board chairmanship after the rookie draft tomorrow.

Alvarez, 51, co-owner of Burger King and also president of SGL Philippines, will also bat for the construction of the league’s own coliseum as he takes over from Alaska Milk’s Joaqui Trillo as the top honcho of the league gearing up for its 35th season in October.

Purefoods’ Rene Pardo will be the new vice chairman while Rain or Shine’s Mamerto Mondragon is the new treasurer.

Alvarez, the Lina Group ball club governor and team manager since its entry into the league in 2002, said he will formally present his plans and programs during the board’s planning session in Tianjin, China Aug. 9-11.

The board is holding its annual meeting in China as part of its commitment to support the Powerade Team Pilipinas competing in the FIBA-Asia Championship.

PBA officials have expressed confidence in Alvarez, a corporate man who rose from the ranks starting from his job at SGV then with Advance Micro Devices before moving over to the Lina Group of Companies. He’s an accounting graduate from Far Eastern U.

“Mr. Lito Alvarez is a dynamic person who knows the value of media mileage and exposure. Likewise, I’m sure he will greatly contribute to making the league more attractive to the watching public and more responsive to the fans’concerns,” said PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.

“I’ll bat for the league expansion. I think it’s about time. It’s ideal for the league. We have a big surplus of players out there,” said Alvarez, a Muntinlupa native married to Maria Vilma with six kids in Marv, Rich Francis, Ross Kenneth, Angeli, Iverson and Maui.

“I’m also looking at a developmental league, equivalent to the NBA ‘D’ League. The best bet would be the Liga Pilipinas. In fact, we have had an initial discussion with Liga Pilipinas commissioner Noli Eala. He has a position paper which I will show to the board in China,” Alvarez also said.

Included in Alvarez’s immediate plans is the restructuring of the PBA from an organization to a corporation.

“In doing so, I believe we would strengthen the league and we could make a lot more things being a corporation,” Alvarez said. “We’ll do the initial initiatives towards achieving this goal in China.”

As a corporation, the PBA will be run by a president or chief operating officer instead of a commissioner.

Alvarez is also keen on reviving the league’s goal of having its own coliseum.

The PBA drafted plans under the chairmanship of Ricky Vargas but the project was shelved under the leaderships of Tony Chua and Joaqui Trillo.

Alvarez didn’t elaborate, though, how will he pursue the project.

As for his team, Alvarez is hopeful they can finally have their breakthrough championship in the coming season.

They own the No. 1 pick in tomorrow’s draft and they’re likely to use it on the 6-foot-9 behemoth Japeth Aguilar.

Purefoods still unsure of 2nd pick

PUREFOODS COACH Ryan Gregorio, who will pick second in the PBA Draft this Sunday, is still torn between big man Rico Maierhofer and Fil-American point guard Chris Ross.

“Right now, our choice is a toss-up, unless of course Burger King suddenly decides to pass up on Japeth (Aguilar),” said Gregorio yesterday while attending the rookie camp conducted by the league for coaches.

“(Rico) Maierhofer is a great player, but we need a point guard to strengthen our backcourt,” Gregorio said. “There are a lot of potentially great point guards that I see right now, and if we do go for a guard (in the Draft), I need to make sure that we pick the right one.”

Gregorio and Purefoods do not have a pick in the second round.

The other likely candidates for the second overall pick according to Gregorio are Chris Timberlake, Joshua Urbiztondo and former UAAP Jervy Cruz of Santo Tomas.

“From what I’ve seen of Ross, he is perfect for the PBA because he is big at 6-foot-1 for a point guard and can play defense,” the two-time champion coach said. “But right now, his perimeter game is still suspect.”

Meanwhile, former two-time MVP Willie Miller is staying with Alaska, contrary to reports that the ace guard is opting out of the final year of his contract.

“We love Willie, and it’s going to take a lot of doing to get him out from us,” Alaska team manager and current board chair Joaqui Trillo said in a separate interview.

Burger King, Coca-Cola work out last-minute trade deal
    08/01/2009 | 09:42 PM

A day before the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual Rookie Draft, Burger King and Coca-Cola was busy hammering out a last-minute trade deal.

The Tigers worked their way to snare the No.3 pick, beating the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants to the draw, in a deal with the Whopper.

Coca-Cola is expected to use that third pick to draft Fil-Am guard Chris Ross, who caught the Tigers’ coaching staff.

Burger King board representative and incoming board chairman Lito Alvarez confirmed to GMANews.TV that the possible trade involving his team and Coca-Cola depends on Purefoods’ move during Sunday’s draft.

Burger King picks first and is expected to tab Japeth Aguilar as the No.1 overall rookie choice.

Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo said, in a telephone interview, that the Giants’ management and coaching staff’s consensus is to select 6-foot-7 forward Rico Maierhofer, who was a key figure in the championship drives of La Salle and Harbour Centre in the UAAP and PBL, respectively.

This means that it is already a done deal with Ross going to Coca-Cola in exchange for the Tigers’ first round pick next year.

“It still depends on what Purefoods will pick. If they go for Maierhofer, then Ross will go to Coca-Cola," said Alvarez. “But if Purefoods selects Ross, then Maierhofer stays with us and the deal with Coke is off."

Coca-Cola assistant coach Bo Perasol believes chances of getting Ross remains 50-50.

“Anything can still happen in the draft, but we are really serious in getting Ross, who showed his versatility playing both guard positions during the Rookie Camp," said Perasol. “We need somebody of Ross’ caliber."

With early negotiations with Burger King for the rights on the No.3 pick falling apart, Purefoods shifted back its attention on Alaska in hope of wooing two-time most valuable player Willie Miller on its fold.

Purefoods board governor said that the deal with Alaska remains hanging. The Giants are offering Enrico Villanueva and a future pick for Miller.

“The deal is still on the table," said Pardo. “We’re just waiting for Alaska’s response."

Alaska board governor and current PBA chairman Joaqui Trillo and multi-titled coach Tim Cone had earlier expressed their intentions to keep the services of the national team standout.

But Purefoods remains persistent. – GMANews.TV

    D-Day Today

Over 50 rookie applicants are hoping to get picked in the PBA’s annual draft at Market! Market! in Taguig this afternoon. Since there will only be two draft rounds and the No. 2 overall slot has been forfeited (by defunct franchise Shell), a total of 19 players will be selected, meaning more than 30 hopefuls will go home unattached.

But it’s not necessarily a bad thing not to be chosen. If an applicant isn’t drafted, he automatically becomes a free agent and has the freedom to choose which team to try out with. Among the undrafted free agents who saw action in the PBA this past season were Mark Yee, Erick Rodriguez, Chad Alonzo, Jeff Chan, Philip Butel, Lawrence Bonus, Nathaniel Cruz and Al Vergara.

A survey among the PBA’s 10 teams revealed that 6-9 Japeth Aguilar of Ateneo and Western Kentucky will be the No. 1 overall pick without a doubt. Aguilar is such a prized catch that three teams are reportedly offering 3-for-1 deals in secure his rights. Barangay Ginebra was rumored to be willing to part ways with Jay-Jay Helterbrand, Billy Mamaril and J. C. Intal for Aguilar. Purefoods supposedly offered Enrico Villanueva, Rich Alvarez and P. J. Simon while Talk ‘N’ Text laid out Yancy de Ocampo, RenRen Ritualo and Ali Peek as bait.

But Burger King, which has the top pick, isn’t biting. Team governor Lito Alvarez, the incoming PBA chairman, said he expects Aguilar, Chris Ross, Rico Maierhofer, Jervy Cruz, Chris Timberlake, Ogie Menor, Michael Burtscher, Ronnie Matias, James Sena and Edwin Asoro to be the first 10 picks. Since the first round will name only nine players, Asoro will be the first pick in the second round in Alvarez’ list.

Purefoods will choose the second overall pick and coach Ryan Gregorio said he’s leaning towards Ross, the first rookie PBL MVP since Eric Menk. In his list, Gregorio named Aguilar, Ross, Cruz, Maierhofer, Sena, Menor, Matias, Timberlake, Orlando Daroya and Marcy Arellano.

Gregorio recently reacquired Marc Pingris in the Arwind Santos three-way deal with Burger King and San Miguel Beer. He may be looking for a pure point guard, like Ross, to bolster the Giants backcourt which right now, counts on Celino Cruz, Topex Robinson and convertible Roger Yap. But if Gregorio could deal for a quality quarterback in exchange for Villanueva, Alvarez and Simon (the same three reportedly offered for Aguilar), there’s no question he’ll go for Maierhofer.

    * * * *

The Whoppers own the No. 3 overall pick, the second of three in the first round. Coach Yeng Guiao will choose whomever is available – Ross or Maierhofer.

Rain Or Shine comes next and coach Caloy Garcia will likely select Cruz, the burly UST center. Garcia’s top 10 rookie list, in order, has Aguilar on top then Maierhofer, Ross, Cruz, Sena, Menor, Timberlake, Matias, Daroya and Asoro.

If Aguilar, Ross, Maierhofer and Cruz are gone, Alaska will probably take either Sena or Menor. Sena, who turns 21 on Aug. 31, is a legitimate 6-3 1/4 power forward from Jose Rizal University. The knock on Sena is he wasn’t particularly impressive in rookie camp but that may not be a gauge of how he’ll do as a pro. Maybe, Sena was “leveraging” to be picked by a team of his choice.

As for Menor, the 6-2 former San Beda hotshot declined a Smart-Gilas offer to play under coach Rajko Toroman for the chance to live his dream in the PBA. He was an NCAA Finals MVP in both the juniors and seniors divisions, indicating a knack to shine under pressure. Menor, 22, played for Magnolia and Burger King in the PBL.

Sta. Lucia Realty will choose No. 6 overall and coach Boyet Fernandez may spring a surprise because in his top 10 list, he tagged former La Salle center Mark Benitez as the fifth pick. Benitez, 25, was measured by the PBA to be 6-4 1/4, the seventh tallest in the draft behind Aguilar, 6-5 Maierhofer, 6-5 Burtscher, 6-5 Jerby del Rosario, 6-4 3/4 Bryan Faundo and 6-4 1/2 P. J. Walsham. A role player, Benitez is eager to bounce back from a controversial ending to his collegiate career.

Fernandez’ top 10 lists shows Aguilar, Ross, Maierhofer, Cruz, Benitez, Sena, Burtscher, Kevin White, Timberlake and Benedict Fernandez.

Barangay Ginebra has the No. 7 overall slot. Coach Joseph Uichico named his top 10 – Aguilar, Maierhofer, Ross, Cruz, Sena, Daroya, Timberlake, Menor, Matias and Burtscher. When Ginebra’s turn to draft comes, Uichico may decide between Daroya and Timberlake.

Daroya, 25, is 6-2 1/ 4 and played the two, three and four spots for Cobra in the PBL. His versatility makes the Calasiao, Pangasinan, native an attraction. Timberlake is one of only 11 applicants less than six-feet tall. But size isn’t a handicap for the cat-quick former University of North Florida point guard who was the PBL Finals MVP this year.

    * * * *

Burger King may use the No. 8 overall slot as trade bait or could exercise its right to pick Matias, Burtscher or Asoro. Matias, who stands 6-3, was on the top 10 list of nine of the 10 PBA coaches. The Swiss-born Burtscher has played three years in the PBL and may be the sleeper in the draft. Asoro, a 6-1 1/2 guard-forward, played for National University and has a reputation as a solid defender.

Capping the first round is San Miguel Beer with the ninth overall pick. Coach Siot Tanquingcen sent in his top 10 list – Aguilar, Maierhofer, Ross, Cruz, Sena, Menor, Daroya, Burtscher, Matias and White.

Barako Bull has no first round pick but owns two in the second. Coach Leo Isaac listed his top 11 rookies – Aguilar, Maierhofer, Ross, Cruz, Sena, Menor, Matias, Faundo, Asoro, Fernandez and Timberlake. Barako has the 11th and 12th overall picks.

Another team without a first round choice is Talk ‘N’ Text. Coach Chot Reyes will choose next to last in the second round. Reyes’ top 10 list has Aguilar, Maierhofer, Ross, Cruz, Menor, Burtscher, Matias, Sena, Ramsey Williams and Arellano.

Coca-Cola won’t pick in either round this year but coach Kenneth Duremdes came up with his first round list – Aguilar, Maierhofer, Ross, Sena, Matias, Timberlake, Williams, Arellano and Cruz.

Williams, 29, is a shade below six-feet and played point guard at the University of Hawaii for a year. He has seen action in the PBL and Liga Pilipinas. Williams made it on the first round lists of Reyes and Duremdes.

In our survey of the 10 PBA teams’ first round picks, only five players were named on every list – Aguilar, Maierhofer (second in seven lists), Ross (second in three, third in seven), Cruz (fourth in eight, third in one) and Sena (fifth in six, fourth in one). Matias was in nine lists, Menor and Timberlake in eight, Daroya in four, Arellano in four and Asoro in three.
