Cebu – The province of Cebu seems to have won the first step in its battle against the three major oil firms operating in the Philippines which are alleged to impose higher fuel prices in the province than in Manila and other parts of the country. This, after the joint Department of Energy-Department of Justice Task Force on Deregulation’s setting in Cebu of the clarificatory hearing on Thursday, July 30.

Said clarificatory hearing is in connection with the preliminary investigation of the complaint filed by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia against Petron Corporation, Chevron Philippines, Inc. and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Inc. which have failed to explain why they are charging a higher price for their products sold in Cebu compared to the rest of the country.

The Cebu provincial government had filed an omnibus motion requesting said Task Force to set the date of the clarificatory hearing and to hold the hearing at the Central Command (Centcom) in Barangay Apas, Cebu.

Garcia had said it was just proper for the Task Force to hold the hearing in Cebu because the province is the complainant and, she stressed, “Cebuanos should witness the proceedings.”
