    Games today:

    Cebu Coliseum
    5 p.m. – MisOr Meteors vs. Trace-Laguna
    7 p.m. – M. Lhuillier-Cebu vs. Mandaue Landmasters

A team with championship experience proved to be too much to handle for a squad that was formed just a day ago.

This was the story yesterday as the reigning champions Misamis Oriental Meteors torched the Mandaue Landmasters, 83-64, in the preseason of the Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Meteors, replete with new and towering players that brought with them ample firepower from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), continued on their quest to defend their title as they blew out the hastily-formed Landmasters which, according to head coach Jun Tan, was formed just last Sunday.

They leaned on the exploits of new players Melvin Mamaclay and Patrick Cabahug, both of whom were key in their second half breakaway. Mamaclay, a former player of the Sta. Lucia Realtors by way of Adamson University, scored five consecutive points in the third period that helped the Meteors extend their 11-point halftime lead to 16 heading into the final canto, 62-46.

He ended up with 14 points while Cabahug, also of Adamson in his college days and formerly of the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, added 12 points.

The Landmasters tried to get back into the game in the fourth stanza as they trimmed the lead down to just 10, 54-64.

However, Misamis Oriental responded with aplomb as they unleashed an 11-1 run that blew the winds out of the sails of the Landmasters.

    Money and meteors!

    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Games today:
    (Cebu Coliseum)
    5 p.m. (For 3rd place)
    Trace Laguna vs. Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue
    7 p.m. (Championship)
    M. Lhuillier-Cebu vs. Misamis Oriental (championship)

THE M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños and the Misamis Oriental Meteors proved that it is not the season of giving yet as they battled tooth-and-nail for the precious victory, even in a non-bearing game of the 2009 Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 Pre-Season tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The host team came through with a dramatic 69-66 victory in a very physical, electrifying and emotional game. The winner-take-all championship game unfolds at 7 tonight.

    Battle

The two teams took their cue from the battle of the winless two hours earlier, where the Trace Laguna Stallions scored 30 points in the final quarter to complete a come-from-behind 93-88 win over the Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue squad.

    M. Lhuillier and MisOr battled hard from the opening tip-off with the Meteors, taking a quick 5-0 lead.

The three-point shooting of the Niños turned the tide around as they came back blazing with a 27-8 answer to lead 27-15 at the end of the first.
MisOr bounced back in the second.

Leaning on the offensive prowess of Neil Rañeses and Erian Daja, the team took back the lead, 39-37, early in the third quarter.

    Lost opportunity

Though the Niños reclaimed the lead quickly with Woodrow Enriquez doing most of the damage, they lost one valuable ally going into the final game today—point guard Mark Ababon, who re-injured his shoulder and is a doubtful starter in today’s championship match.

With the players banging bodies as if there was no tomorrow, at the sideline coaches Raul Alcoseba of the Niños and Jun Noel of the Meteors also did their side of the show, fueled by their coaching staff and supporters.

Today, Alcoseba’s defense will be centered on the three-pronged offensive thrust of Noel—Rañeses, Patrick Cabahug and Melvin Mamaclay.

    MLKP routs Meteors

    By Rommel C. Manlosa

IF COACH Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is to grade the performance of his M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala squad in last night’s Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 Pre-Season championship—his rate would be 9 out of 10.

“I told the players that even if this is just a pre-season tournament, we need to make an impression,” Alcoseba told reporters after the game.

    M. Lhuillier won the knockout championship match with an overwhelming 71-61 decision over its arch-rival the Misamis Oriental Meteors at the Cebu Coliseum.
The host team did not allow the Meteors to gain momentum after the visitors led 6-4 at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter.

“We still lack some players. I am waiting for the results of the PBA draft where we are going to hire three players. There’s a 6’7” Fil-Am...I hope we can get him if he will not be drafted and I need more wing players and another shooter perhaps. We will go big in the next conference,” Alcoseba said.

Alcoseba took the lessons from the Game 5 loss to the bigger Misamis Oriental Meteors in the Conference 2 finals last April to heart, and he moved Marlon Basco to the wing position.

With a bigger and more aggressive line-up, M. Lhuillier did not allow the Meteors to creep within the “panic” range, keeping the Misamis Oriental squad at bay by at least two points.

    M. Lhuillier chalked up the biggest lead of the game at 48-34 before the Meteors, led by Neil Rañeses, suddenly burst to life to cut down the lead to 51-53 with 1:21 left in the third.

    Leader

But the Cebuanos did not allow things to get worse as they quickly regained their composure and held MisOr scoreless until the 5:14 mark of the fourth and reinstated an 11-point lead.

Melvin Mamaclay and Patrick Cabahug each nailed a triple on MisOr’s quick 10-2-run for a 64-61 count but Enriquez gave M. Lhuillier the breather with a three-point play
and two free throws to seal the win.

Enriquez again lead Cebu scorers with 18 points. Bruce Dacia and Stephen Padilla each scored 12 and Ariel Mepaña picked the right time to shine with 11 points for M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala.
