Fire Quinito 2009 PBA mock draft, version 1.0
The PBA draft happens this Sunday, and while there's a lot of buzz regarding Burger King possibly selling the rights to draft Japeth Aguilar (as they did with Arwind Santos, Cyrus Baguio, and all their stars), ayoko munang patulan yun. Here's my first mock draft:
First round
Burger King (acquired from Barako Bull): Japeth Aguilar - I think there's a 50-50 chance that Burger King sells this pick to the highest bidder, despite management promising Yeng Guiao that they'll acquire Aguilar.
The second overall pick, originally belonging to Coca-Cola, is forfeited after it was traded to the now-disbanded Shell franchise.
Purefoods: Rico Maierhoffer - Ryan "The Genius" Gregorio already declared that he has the hots for Maierhoffer, even though PBL MVP Chris Ross is perfect for this Purefoods team. But that's why he's a genius. I like Maierhoffer, but the Ross-Meierhoffer situation might turn out like the Ryan Reyes-JC Intal debate from the 2007 draft.
Burger King: Jervy Cruz - I'd take Ross here, but BK has this weird thing about never taking Fil-Ams. They may still draft Ross to sell him before the season starts.
Rain or Shine: Chris Ross - Best case situation for RoS. They really can't go wrong with whoever falls on their laps in the draft.
Alaska: Ogie Menor - Yet another talented, high-flying youngster for Tim Cone to bench.
Sta. Lucia: Josh Vanlandingham - Fills two needs for SLR: size at the shooting guard spot and outside shooting.
Ginebra: James Sena - Best big man available.
Burger King (acquired from Talk N Text): Ronnie Matias - Ronnie Matias was born to play for Yeng Guiao. The question is, will Yeng Guiao still be the BK coach next season? He might not be if Lito "****face" Alvarez decides to sell Japeth. Matias will be this year's Larry Rodriguez.
San Miguel: Chris Timberlake - They'll need a third point guard if Olsen Racela decides to retire.
Second round
Barako Bull: Bryan Faundo - Apart from the best big man available, Barako Bull assistant Ariel Vanguardia also coached him in the PBL.
Sta. Lucia (acquired from Coca-Cola): Lance Convento - More outside shooting and backcourt size for Sta. Lucia. He's also Ryan Reyes' cousin.
Barako Bull (acquired from Purefoods): Orlando Darroya - It's a bit of a reach, but he played his best ball for Barako Bull coach Leo Isaac with Arellano University
Burger King: Ian Saladaga - Saladaga acquitted himself very well in the last PBL conference as an athletic shooter.
Rain or Shine: PJ Walsham - RoS needs big bodies inside, since their only backup at center right now is Mark Andaya.
Alaska: Francis Allera - Yet another talented shooter from UST for Tim Cone to bench.
Sta. Lucia: Josh Urbiztondo - Insurance in the backcourt for Sta. Lucia.
Ginebra: Marcy Arellano - Jayjay Helterbrand and possibly Mark Caguioa will be back next season, but Paul Artadi, Chico Lanete, and Chris Pacana are all free agents.
Talk N Text: Kevin White - I know nothing about him, except that he's Jimmy Alapag's nephew.
Burger King: Edwin Asoro - An athletic guy who's never shown that he can put it all together.
