    PBA DRAFT UPDATE

PBA set to open camp for rookies
    Thursday, July 23, 2009 3:20:00 AM

Prospective applicants for this year's Rookie Draft get to show both their physical and mental skills when the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) hold its traditional rookie camp in two different venues at the end of the month.

The camp is set July 28, 30, and 31, with supervisor of officials Ramil Cruz acting as camp director.

The first day of the event will be a whole-day affair at the Club 650 gym in Libis, Quezon City from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Then skills and strength evaluation follows, from the simple push ups, bench press, sit ups, sprints to pull ups.

Finally in the afternoon, drills will be conducted, with participants engaging in agility, shooting, dribbling and fastbreak activities.

The camp takes a break the following day, but resumes on July 30-31 with all rookies seeing action in the four-game schedule to be played at the Caruncho gym in Pasig City.

All participants will be split into four teams. Group 1 plays Group 3 in the first game at 2 p.m., while Group 2 clashes with Group 4 at 4 p.m.

The final day of the camp is a crossover double header between Group 1 vs. Group 2 (2 p.m.) and Group 3 vs. Group 4 (4 p.m.).

The official rookie team rosters will be sent out this Friday (July 24), although coaching assignments are going to be announced later.

This year's PBA Rookie Draft is set August 2 at the Market Market Place in Taguig.

Japeth makes formal bid for PBA draft

    By Nelson Beltran

TAIPEI – Japeth Aguilar, the towering former Ateneo player who is expected to be the next dominant big man in Philippine basketball, has decided to join the coming PBA draft.

Aguilar, 22, formalized his draft application yesterday after playing five games with Powerade Team Pilipinas – a selection of PBA stars – in the ongoing Jones Cup competition here.

He left his application papers in a sealed envelope in Manila before joining the Nationals in their trip here. He told PBA officials here it’s now an official application after deciding with finality that he’s making himself available for the draft set Aug. 2 in Market! Market! in Taguig.

“It’s a family decision. It’s for my future. We’ve thought it’s better for me to join the PBA now,” said Japeth, son of former national and pro player Peter.

“My parents have thought I would be better off here than in the (United) States. We felt I would earn more in the PBA with my salary there and possible endorsements,” said Aguilar.

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios welcomed Aguilar’s decision.

“The PBA family welcomes Japeth Aguilar to the premier basketball league of the country. I am confident he will be an asset not only to his team but also to the PBA while he showcases his basketball talent and skills,” said Barrios.

“I wish him all the best as I join all PBA fans eagerly waiting for his debut in the games this coming October,” Barrios added.

Aguilar is expected to become the league’s first homegrown player drafted No. 1 overall in the PBA since Yancy de Ocampo in 2002. And he could well be the league’s next Ramon Fernandez or Alvin Patrimonio.

“For sure, he will become a PBA superstar,” said RP team coach Yeng Guiao of Aguilar who averages 8.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.6 shot blocks here.

Guiao said he’s been assured by Burger King governor and team manager Lito Alvarez that they will keep their rights on the No. 1 pick and they will use it on Aguilar.

Aguilar, however, admitted that another team is interested in enlisting him, giving an option of having a mother club in the PBA and playing for RP Smart Gilas during PBA off-season.

2 JRU cagers join PBA draft
By FRANCIS SANTIAGOJuly 23, 2009, 7:02pmTwo players deemed instrumental to Jose Rizal University’s runner up finish in the NCAA last season are set to sign up today for the PBA Annual Draft set August 2.

James Sena and Mark Cagoco, who are currently playing their final NCAA season, will make themselves available for the draft set at Market! Market! in Taguig City, JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia said on Thursday.

“They will sign up today,” Vanguardia said.

At 6-foot-5, Sena had a successful four-year stint in the NCAA and Toyota/Licealiz in the PBL.

“He can be an imposing player inside and he is an offensive threat. I think he could be picked in the first round,” said Vanguardia, also a Barako Bull assistant coach in the PBA.

Asked if the Barako Bull is willing to get Sena for its No. 11 pick, Vanguardia said: “The management hasn’t discussed it. But I would like to have him because he will be a great addition to head coach Leo (Isaac of Barako).”

The 21-year-old Sena has so far posted a double-double performance of 15.6 points and 10 rebounds in the past five games of the on-going NCAA season 85.

“He’ll get my vote,” Vanguardia said of Sena, member of the mythical five in the NCAA last season.

Cagoco, a 5-foot-10 point guard, has a norm of 12 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in his last five games in the NCAA. The 24-year-old Cagoco also played in the PBL with Toyota and Licealiz.

Led by the two, the Heavy Bombers are on top of the standings alongside San Sebastian College with similar 5-0 win-loss records.

Meantime, the NCAA gave the Sena and Cagoco the green light to join the draft after the two submitted letters indicating their intention to the NCAA management committee last week.

Manncomm chair Mari Lacson said the two can still play until the end of the season provided that they will not sign any contract. This year’s NCAA basketball tournament ends on the third week of August.

BK, Purefoods working on multi-player trade deal

Burger King is giving Purefoods a very tempting offer that the Tender Juicy Giants could possibly not refuse.

BK is willing to trade its draft rights for Japeth Aguilar to the TJ Giants in exchange for three players plus its No. 2 pick in next month’s Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual Rookie Draft.

This was according to Burger King board governor and incoming PBA chairman Lito Alvarez who told GMANews.TV, in an interview Friday, that negotiations are underway for the four-player deal.

Alvarez said they are now negotiating with Purefoods of possibly getting Enrico Villanueva, Peter June Simon and Rich Alvarez, and its No.2 pick in exchange for Aguilar.

“If I can get Rico Maierhofer in the coming draft then let go of the chance of picking Japeth Aguilar but will get three marquee players in Villanueva, Simon and Alvarez (instead), I think it would be a great deal for us," said Alvarez.

The 6-foot-9 Aguilar is expected to be this year’s top rookie pick in the August 2 draft at the Market! Market! Activity Center in Taguig City.

Alvarez said the former Western Kentucky University standout boosted his stock with his impressive performance in the William Jones Cup tournament while playing for Powerade-Team Pilipinas.

For Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo, Burger King’s offer on Aguilar is “very tempting."

“Who will pass up on the opportunity of securing a 6-foot-9 forward and trained in the United States? I mean, this only comes once in a lifetime and we will be more than happy to get Japeth if given the chance. But I think four players in exchange of Aguilar is too much. Maybe we should get another player in return," said Pardo.

Pardo and Alvarez will meet on Monday to further discuss the negotiations in time before the August 2 draft.

Aside from having the No. pick, Burger King also holds Nos. 3 and 8 while Purefoods will draft second.

The Giants are also reportedly working on a separate deal to get the No.3 draft rights of the Whopper. – GMANews.TV
