Guiao wants Aguilar as top pick

As far as coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao is concerned, he’s dead-set of making the 6-foot-9 Japeth Aguilar as Burger Kings’ top overall pick in next month’s PBA Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Place in Taguig City.
However, there are questions that need to be answered.
Like who will be the Whoppers’ two other picks in the first round? Who will go as the third overall selection?
These questions may dictate where the top amateur stalwarts would end up in the Draft set August 2.
Burger King got the first pick in the 2009 Draft when it traded Gabby Espinas to Barako Bull during the off-season last year in exchange for this year’s first round pick. Barako Bull ended its campaign ranked 10th last season.
Guiao already mentioned he wants Aguilar in his line-up, a tall guy who can run the fast break for an easy two or swatting away opponents’ shots.
“He can help us with his height, his quickness,” said Guiao, who is currently with the all-PBA PowerAde Team Pilipinas team competing in the Jones Cup in Taipei. “He has the potential to be a very good player in the pro league.”
Burger King, which reportedly is working to trade Arwind Santos to San Miguel Beer, will also be picking fourth and ninth (from the Yancy de Ocampo trade with Talk ’N Text) in the drafting order.
In this year’s Draft, there will be no second pick, which originally belongs to the now disbanded team of Shell, while Purefoods owns the No. 3 pick.
Rain or Shine, which had the top pick last year and used it to tab the services of Gabe Norwood, the eventual winner of the Rookie of the Year honors, will select fifth in the Draft, followed by Alaska (6th), Sta. Lucia Realty (7th), Barangay Ginebra (8th) and newly-crowned Fiesta Cup champion SMB (10th).
In the second round, picking 11th is Red Bull, Sta. Lucia Realty (from the Joseph Yeo-Cesar Catli deal) 12th, Red Bull 13th, Burger King 14th, Rain or Shine 15th, Alaska 16th, Sta. Lucia 17th, Ginebra 18th, Talk ’N Text 19th and Burger King 20th.
Meantime, only nine Fil-foreigners were able to beat the deadline imposed by the league last week.
These are Lance Masigla Convento, Christopher Timberlake, Joshua Urbiztondo, Ramsey Williams, John Walsham, Charles Waters, Christopher Ross, Kevin White and Joshua Vanlandingham.
On the other hand, the deadline for local players hoping to join the Draft is on Friday.

Prospective applicants for this year's Rookie Draft get to show both their physical and mental skills when the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) hold its traditional rookie camp in two different venues at the end of the month.
The camp is set July 28, 30, and 31, with supervisor of officials Ramil Cruz acting as camp director.
The first day of the event will be a whole-day affair at the Club 650 gym in Libis, Quezon City from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Then skills and strength evaluation follows, from the simple push ups, bench press, sit ups, sprints to pull ups.
Finally in the afternoon, drills will be conducted, with participants engaging in agility, shooting, dribbling and fastbreak activities.
The camp takes a break the following day, but resumes on July 30-31 with all rookies seeing action in the four-game schedule to be played at the Caruncho gym in Pasig City.
All participants will be split into four teams. Group 1 plays Group 3 in the first game at 2 p.m., while Group 2 clashes with Group 4 at 4 p.m.
The final day of the camp is a crossover double header between Group 1 vs. Group 2 (2 p.m.) and Group 3 vs. Group 4 (4 p.m.).
The official rookie team rosters will be sent out this Friday (July 24), although coaching assignments are going to be announced later.

Ginebra to re-sign Jayjay, Caguioa
By WAYLON GALVEZ

Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa are expected to be re-signed when Barangay Ginebra starts negotiations with 14 players whose contracts have expired.
While the Kings’ coaching staff has the prerogative to choose who will be retained, Helterbrand and Caguioa will be retained, according to San Miguel Corp. basketball operations chief Robert Non.
“They’re the team’s franchise players,” said Non.
The other Ginebra players whose contracts expire this season are Eric Menk, Sunday Salvacion, Chris Pacana, Willie Wilson, Rafi Reavis, Paul Artadi, Ronald Tubid and Chico Lanete.
At presstime, the Kings were playing against San Miguel Beer last night for the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup crown at the Araneta Coliseum.
Caguioa’s contract expired last July 15 along with Junthy Valenzuela, Junjun Cabatu, Macky Escalona and JR Aquino expired last July 15. Billy Mamaril’s contract ends on July 30.
Caguioa actually missed the entire 2008-09 PBA season because of tendonitis. He underwent rehabilitation program in the United States before returning recently.
“Si Mark (Caguioa) naman okay na ‘yung rehab n’ya. Babalik lang uli s’ya sa US for vacation. Pero once na umuwi s’ya dito, conditioning na lang and he’ll be ready for the all-Filipino (Philippine Cup) next season,” Non said.
The Kings have four players who are still under contract, and these are Cyrus Baguio, JC Intal, Homer Se, and Doug Kramer.
San Miguel, on the other hand, is expected to keep franchise players Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros.
Seigle, who is recuperating from a back injury in the US, has a contract with SMC that expired last July 15 along with Lordy Tugade. Hontiveros’ deal, on the other hand, will end on July 31.
The contracts of Jonas Villanueva, the Most Improved Player winner this season, Marc Pingris, Mike Cortez, Dorian Peña, Olsen Racela, Wesley Gonzales, Chris Calaguio, and Sam Eman also ended with the conclusion of the Finals.
There are 46 other players who are expected to seek contract extension with their respective mother clubs or sign new deals with other teams.
PBA FACED WITH RED BULL DILEMMA
Posted on 19 July 2009
PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios and the board of governors headed by chairman Joaqui Trillo face a dilemma with regard to the Red Bull franchise following complaints by several players including those traded, of not being paid.
The problem has been discussed in whispers in recent days after John Arigo raised the issue of non-payment with Commissioner Sonny Barrios and player agent Danny Espiritu also reported to Barrios on behalf of eight players he manages including Cyrus Baguio who was traded by Red Bull to Ginebra but still has some collectibles.
Trillo said the PBA has to act to protect its reputation even as it tries to find the best way to prevent damage to Red Bull which reportedly suffered another setback when a former Red Bull agent started importing the product directly from Thailand and bypassed the authorized sole distributor in the Philippines .
Inside Sports|, Standard Today and Viva Sports learned that there have been efforts by former PBA chairman Tony Chua to sell the franchise without success even as he claimed in a conversation with us last week that there were several interested parties standing in line.
However, except for some indication that Talk N’ Text showed interest in acquiring the franchise to back up its partial investment in Burger King so as to be at par with San Miguel Corporation which owns three teams – San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods – former chairman Ricky Vargas said they were no longer interested because the asking price was well above its market value after Chua disposed of his star players one after the other.
Indications are that the Red Bull equity in the league is more than enough to pay off the outstanding obligations to the players which will be the first priority of the PBA in case it decides to take that route.
Some players have argued that Red Bull cannot hold them to their contracts since the team has clearly violated the provisions of the Uniform Players Contract.
Commissioner Barrios realizes that the league is bigger than any one single team and has said they need to take “quick and decisive action while at the same time being fair to Red Bull as part of due process.”
Some governors have asked Barrios to send a formal communication to Red Bull and inquire about how the management plans to handle the problem even as it is clear that the team’s equity cannot be used to pay outstanding obligations to players without the authorization of the franchise holder.
Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao resigned some months ago and moved to Burger King while former team manager and later consultant, well-known TV analyst Andy Jao resigned last June providing a hint of the team’s financial troubles.
Alaska extends LA, Thoss pacts
Thursday, July 23, 2009 3:15:00 AM
The Alaska Aces secured their lineup for the next three years by signing up point guard LA Tenorio and center Sonny Thoss to identical three-year pacts worth P12.6 million at the maximum allowable salary in the Philippine Basketball Association of P350,000 a month.
Tenorio signed the contract at the Alaska Milk Corporation head office in Makati last Monday. It came on the heels of the renewal of Alaska center Thoss and swingman Brandon Cablay last week.
Tenorio averaged 11 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 36 minutes per game as the starting point guard of the Aces.
"He is a fighter even though he is small," said Trillo. "He deserves the maximum contract. He is our only point guard in the team and he is a leader even though he is very young."
Tenorio was himself excited at the prospect of playing another three seasons for the Aces. He thanked Trillo and the Alaska management for the confidence in him.
"I feel the pressure of their expectations but for me it is more of a challenge. I am grateful that they trust me and look at me that way. I have to live up to their expectation," said Tenorio.
Thoss was signed to the same terms as Tenorio -- three years for the maximum allowable amount in the PBA of P350,000.
Cablay, who is coming back from what many thought was a career-ending injury, was signed for a year at P150,000 a month or a total of P1.8 million.
Thoss welcomed the chance to continue playing for the Aces which drafted him as the team's first overall pick in 2004.
"I'm very happy to renew my contract with Alaska," said Thoss through his agent Charlie Dy. "Alaska management and the coaches have been very supportive. I love this team because we're like one big happy family here."
Dy said center JayR Reyes of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters has likewise signed a three-year pact also worth P12.6 million.
Reyes contract will be effective Aug. 16, 2009 to Aug. 15, 2012.
Trillo said Alaska offered Cablay a two-year pact. Cablay however asked for the one-year contract instead perhaps hoping for a chance to prove himself in his first year and get a better deal afterwards.
Cablay said he needed a few months to get back into game shape and be able to shoe what he could do.
"I need to get stronger to approximate my playing in previous years in the PBA," said Cablay. "I do not necessarily have to get back to the gym. I need to work on specific drills. I am happy to be back with Alaska. I will have Alaska trainers Gus Vargas and Mike Braga helping get me back into basketball shape." The Philippine Star
