IMHO, dark ages means, ill-fated and misinformed about what's going to happen when you die or what's going to happen in the future. there were too many deaths caused by the fall of west roman empire. It was also said that it is between the struggle of faith and enlightenment. Correct me if I'm wrong because I wasn't there when it happened... hahaha :

we call those centuries after the fall of rome as the dark ages. then the 17th to 19th century as the renaissance/age of enlightenment/age of rebirth of the arts. so, what age are we in?

Few are written in history books because those documents are either hidden or destroyed... but what we do know is that the VATICAN APOLOGIZE the inquisition. What happen to religion during that time is that Religion is a very powerful tool that it allows the expansion of kingdoms and civilization... without those times though we might be left behind... those times are so important that it really expanded the unification in political terms. Inquisition are intended for people against the church and to be specific against the POPE. Who is a pope by the way in the Bible... Christ never mention a successor...

^^ The spanish inquisition started after the end of renaissance period or the late middle ages. If my world history serves me right, the inquisition was about 3 reasons, politics, economics and religion. But my opinion is that it was all about economics and religion because Jews and Christians hated each other because Christians hated the Jews because they crucified Christ and the Jews hated the Christians because they grafted themselves and created a new one [religion: christianity]. It wasn't intended for people to fight against the church because the inquisitors did it as "God's Will".

The dark ages or middle ages was a desperate times of struggle. Mainly in economics and politics.

yeps, they drove scientific inquiry, freethinkers under ground with those persecutions and witch hunts. "knowledge" pretty much stagnated and borderline paranoid.

science managed to rise above during the Renaissance, when the church was busy licking its bleeding wounds.
