MANILA, Philippines - Joshua Saret made history Wednesday when he sizzled for 89 points in Jose Rizal University's 171-43 massacre of Angeles University Foundation in the 85th NCAA juniors tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The 5-foot-8 point guard from Mandaluyong surpassed the 82-point record set by former teammate Keith Agovida in last year's tournament.

Saret actually finished with a rare quadruple-double, grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out 12 assists and posting 13 steals.

He made 33 of his 54 shots and 9 of his 10 free throws. Saret went 14-of-28 from beyond the arc.

Bombs away: JRU’s Saret fires 89 points in NCAA jrs

On the day of the longest solar eclipse ever recorded, records were also being eclipsed on Wednesday in the NCAA juniors basketball tournament or probably in the annals of Philippine caging.

Jose Rizal U’s Point guard Joshua Saret lived up to his billing as the most promising junior player in the league when he posted a quadruple-double topped by 89 points in the Light Bombers' 171-43 win over the Angeles U Foundation Junior Danes at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

Saret spiked his massive point production with 11 rebounds, 12 assists and 13 steals to post the league's first ever quadruple-double since Ryan Buenafe of San Sebastian, who now plays for Ateneo, did it two years ago.

In his feat of overshadowing the league's best production, Saret posted a 50 percent clip from the two point area and a 78 percent success rate from beyond the arc as he sank 19 of his 26 attempts.

Saret now stands as the league's best scorer since former teammate Keith Agovida bombed the Astrodome with 82 points on Sept. 4 last season.

Third among the best point production is Letran’s Marlon Bola Bola who scored 71 points four decades ago.

But Saret's record bested even those posted in the country's professional league.

The Light Bomber's production is better than the 79 points scored by Allan “The Triggerman" Caidic in the PBA in 1987. Caidic's record was the highest by any Filipino in any tournament.

And even Lakers' superstar Kobe Bryant's best of 81 fell short at Saret's feat.

“It’s good for the school, we’re proud of him," said Jose Rizal’s board representative Paul Supan.

“We’re excited to have him in our seniors’ team because he has already committed playing (for JRU) next year."

Because of Saret's record-breaking performance, JRU Bombers head coach Ariel Vanguardia is now unsure if they can still keep the point guard within the JRU fold.

"Kailangang maglabas na ng kotse kay Saret," said Vanguardia, adding that Ateneo is now trying to recruit the graduating high school student.

"Ang sabi ko kay Paul na kailangan namin si Saret next year dahil mawawala na si Cagoco," added Vanguardia who is referring to one of the Bombers top scorer Mark Cagoco. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

    Jose Rizal 171 - Saret 89, Garcia 17, Vigil 17, Vasquez 10, Barranco 10, Oliveria 9, dela Paz 8, Fegidero 6, Rosales 2, Yasa 2, Ludovice 1, Damian 0, Rodriguez 0, Tnaquntic 0, Ocampo 0

    AUF 43- Gando 18, Bondoc 10, Dizon 5, Maniti 4, Lakandula 3, Castilllejos 2, Olalia 1, Tuazon 0, Tamayo 0, Sanchez 0, Cayanan 0

    Quarterscores: 41-12; 85-22; 125-32; 171-43

another stunning performance in NCAA Juniors...

SAN JUAN CITY – The San Beda Red Cubs won in record fashion over the still winless Angeles Univesity Foundation Junior Danes, 172-39, in the resumption of NCAA Season 85 action at the San Juan Arena Wednesday (August 5).

Employing a balanced attack on both ends of the court, the Red Cubs of Coach Edmundo Badolato raced to an 11-0 lead en route to taking the first period, 41-6, behind the 11 points of Baser Amer.

By the halftime break, the margin had ballooned to 88-12. The Red Cubs thus broke the record for highest total points and highest winning margin both set by the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers in their 171-47 demolition of the same Angeles squad two weeks ago.

The Red Cubs’ defense limited the Junior Danes to six points in each of the first three periods. The Junior Danes coughed up a horrific 77 turnovers against only 19 for the Red Cubs. The Red Cubs registered 32 steals against only four for the Junior Danes. Overall, the Red Cubs translated the Junior Danes’ turnovers into 108 points.

Arthur dela Cruz led the Red Cubs with 30 points as three other teammates had 20 or more points. Eight of the 11 Red Cubs fielded had 10 or more markers. However, Amer stole the show with his quadruple double of 16 points, 12 rebounds, 20 assists and 14 steals in 30 minutes of play.

Gary Gando topped the Junior Danes with 11 points and nine rebounds followed by Leo Tuazon with 10 points.

The Red Cubs upped their win-loss card to 7-1 while the Junior Danes fell to 0-8.

    How They Scored:

    SAN BEDA-RIZAL (172) – dela Cruz 30, Moralde 27, Sara 22, Abatayo 21, Amer 16, Monteclaro 14, Javier 11, Ludovice 11, dela Costa 9, Chavez 7, Lunas 4.
