MANILA, Philippines – Former standouts from the Philippine Basketball League backstopped by ex-Philippine Basketball Association superstars are being eyed for the RP team to the inaugural Asean Basketball League starting Oct. 1 in Singapore.
The team, to be handled by Letran coach Louie Alas, is considering former PBL standouts Jerwin Gaco, Patrick Cabahug, Chester Taylor, Al Vergara, Virgilio Serios, Jayson Nocom, Neil Raneses, Emer Saldua and Ian Saladaga to form its young core.
And to infuse experience and name-recall, the squad is wooing ex-PBA superstars Alvin Patrimonio, Benjie Paras, Vergel Meneses, Samboy Lim, and Johnny Abarrientos and legends Robert Jaworski and Ramon Fernandez.
Management, including owner Mikee Romero, team manager Erik Arejola and assistant manager Albert Tirona, is also serious in tapping the “Black Superman" Billy Ray Bates, now 53, Bong Alvarez, Nelson Asaytono, Rodney Santos and Gerry Esplana as guest players.
Alas will be holding tryouts on Aug. 15 at the San Juan Arena to complete the roster.
"There are two objectives in forming this team -- to form a competitive team that can win the championship and entertain the Filipino overseas workers," said Bobby Barreiro of ABC 5, which will air the ABL games live on Saturdays and Sundays.
The league was the idea of Malaysian business tycoon Tony Fernandes. It was launched in Kuala Lumpur a few months back and has gained the support of other businessmen from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

"The opportunity for the league is so vast that it is very exciting. The league also provides players the chance to have a livelihood. There are even opportunities for Filipino players to play for other clubs," said Barreiro during Tuesday’s PSA Forum. –
