sharing this insights from the CV-GSDA President, Schutzhund Trainor/Judge Mr. R Muego. quoted from email:
For some of us here Cebu who still don't understand the German Way of evaluating a German Shepherd, let me explain so we can all familiarize ourselves. And not be left
half learned or just not so clear of what's going on... ok here we gooo... i will explain in layman's language...
in conformation show (meaning dog show)...the germans call it landesgruppen sieger show
meaning...a regional championship dog show... like what we'll have this coming Sept 6.
a dog show the "german way" is mostly concerned with correct structur, correct movement, meaning either walking or running. stamina, the more power your dog has in running the better of you are. temperament wise....the judge can see if your dog is balance mentally, shy, or will bite people..hehe. some people think that if they have a big dog...they are suppose to win...not true. there are certain height standards...minimum height and maximum height. long coat...long hair is a major fault...missing teeth a problem also...light eyes, one ball or no balls are disqualification. dark colored dogs have some advantage over light colored dogs...depending also on the structure, movement and temperament of the dog.
all males will only compete with all males and females only compete with females..
..in an all breed show the dog compete in mixed sexes.
here are the age groups your dog will compete in a dog show the german way
...3months - under 6 mos,(called Baby Puppy) 6 under 9mos.(called Junior Puppy), 9 under 12 mos.( Senior Puppy), 12 under 18mos(called Youth male or female).; 18mos. under 24 mos.(Young female or male) and 24mos. and up (are called Working male or female). In countries in north america and europe, your dog must be at least a Schutzhund1 (SchH1) to participate in the Working Class Group (24mos. and up).
In the Philippines, dogs in the 24mos. can still compete without a schutzhund degree. but we are in the process of changing that...hopefully we succeed and be like everyone else
and will no longer take a detour and bypass the important thing... Schutzhund!
the ratings you get, meaning the grades the judge will give your dog are as follows...... from ages 3mos. to under 12mos....your dog can get...topmost...."very promising".....then "promising"....then "less promising"....In the 12mos. to under 24mos. the highest grade you can get is an SG, the german way, translated to english means "Very Good" .... next is G...meaning "Good" then A...meaning sufficient...then lastly is M (insufficient). Personally, if your dog is rated SG1, SG2, SG3, SG4 and so forth one should be happy with that rating, it's the highest your dog can get!! wether your 2nd place or 3rd or 4th..etc...your dog received an SG!! as long as you don't get a "G" .... a rating of G is
not really that hot! worse are the ratings lower than G....
In the 24mos. and up age group (working class)....In a Landesgruppen Sieger Show
the highest assessment you can get is a "V"...meaning Excellent! So again if your
dog is in the "V" rating, regardless if your dog is V1, V2, V3, V4, etc. and so forth..one
should be happy with that, the SGs are the 2nd best...then the Gs....then the As and Ms.
The VA rating (excellent select)...this is a rating over the Vs (excellent) rating. This VA rating is only awarded in the annual Sieger Show held once a year. Here we call it "The Philippine Sieger Show" held around Nov in Manila. In Germany of course they call it the "German Sieger Show" held around Aug or Sept. and in America...they call it "USA Sieger Show" held in April of each year.
Please be reminded that central visayas Landesgruppen is scheduled on September 6, 2009. tentative venue(to be confirmed) is U.P. Lahug Football Ground.
