As I read intently your thesis and your examples, it seems that you're not asking for the existence of self-sacrifice itself but questioning the underlying intent or motive thereof which voids the whole act of self-sacrifice as another or a grander version of a quid pro quo -- "i'll scratch your back, you scratch mine" sort of thing.

Any action (including self-sacrifice) comes with it the intent to carry out its goal no matter how absurd or noble those goals are and as to whether or not the goals could even be accomplished. It is meaningless or at the very least contrary to reason to induce oneself to self-sacrifice without any goals at all.
therefore, does it exist or not?

In concept and observation, yes. The incentive or as you would like to call it the underlying "benefit" does not negate its existence. In fact, it affirms it -- the very nature of all human actions (self-sacrifice included) proves that they are all inspired or driven by motive.

i suppose.. the question then is when will that "incentive" negate the "self-sacrifice"?

I think that cannot happen. For always, the anticipation of incentive drives every human action to take place -- be that action is as trivial as cleaning up your dog's crap or as grand as dying for a lost cause. In other words, "self-sacrifice" is no less different from any other form of human action -- they are all driven by motive or incentive. What sets self-sacrifice apart from other human actions is the difficulty of doing it or the rarity of such event in which people tend to hype it as something noble or worthy of a posthumous recognition in which in essence is no different from suicide in form and substance.

Perhaps the best way to trivialize or negate the hype in self-sacrifice is to take it as "glorified suicide."

    i see.. good points there..

what about the seemingly "self-sacrifice" act that instead benefits one's self.. isn't that a false motive?

or isn't that a contradictory motive or end result?
