Hello! another indie film is getting a nationwide theater run and a big boost of support from Unitle Productions (the guys who brought you Crying Ladies, La Visa Loca and several nice films).

They will have a PREMIERE showing At SM cinema 1 this coming Tuesday, Feb.28 at 8pm,
Christopher De Leon and Epy Quizon will be there. ^_^

"Nasaan si Francis?",
a dark comedy full of laughable mishaps and crazy twists, stars Rivermaya's multi-talented and charismatic frontman, Rico Blanco with Epy Quizon, Paolo Contis, and Christopher de Leon. Rico plays Sonny, the well-meaning, weak-witted sidekick of Boy (Paolo Contis) who are out to make a quick buck from their rich druggy friend Francis (Epy Quizon) to free Boy's girlfriend from the clutches of a violent mama-san.

Created from a story developed by Bacolod-based directors Peque Gallega and Gabriel Fernandez (who directed the movie as well as the play), 'Nasaan si Francis?' features an impressive ensemble cast that also includes Ricky Davao, Karl Roy, Rita Avila, Angel Aquino, Tanya Garcia, Julia Clarete, and Michael de Mesa. Epy does double-duty as the movie's producer alongside Michael de Castro under the aegis of Tony Gloria's Unico Films.

Rico was previously lauded for his critically-acclaimed 'Judas' alongside Noel Cabangon, Cynthia Alexander and Joey Ayala in Jesus Christ Superstar, in 2000 and 2001. He has also scored Celeste Legaspi's Saranggola ni Pepe for theater.

Despite numerous movie and tv offers, Rico says he only accepted this project because a Peque Gallaga protege was at the helm and because Epy Quizon, whom Rico highly respects as an artist, was the person who asked him to do it.

Indi film ni cya diba? i saw the trailer and lingaw baya cya.. i was surprised to see Rico Blanco in this movie.. i think i'm gonna watch this just out of curiosity.

USLS play now a movie

BY CARLA GOMEZWhat started out as a small comedy play at the University of Saint La
Salle in Bacolod City is now a motion picture that will be shown in
Metro Manila theaters starting March 1 and in Bacolod City March 8.

The play originally titled "Diin Na Si Francis?", has been renamed
Nasaan Si Francis?", its director Gabby Fernandez, who studied at
USLS where he obtained a degree in mass communications in 1993, said
yesterday.

Produced by independent groups and distributed by Unitel Pictures
(Crying Ladies, Santa-Santita, Pinoy/Blonde), it stars Paolo Contis,
Rico Blanco, Epy Quizon, Christopher de Leon backed by an ensemble
cast of veteran actors, Fernandez said.

"Francis" was originally staged as an output of the Being Class of
the Negros Summer Workshops in 2003. From a story concept of Peque
Gallaga and Fernandez, the actors improvised on the scenes to create
a one-act play.

"This was then turned into a film script. The script got the
attention of Unitel Pictures who proposed to produce it into a
movie," Fernandez said.

The synopsis is simple: two friends go to Francis' hacienda house set
in Victorias to borrow money. Instead of lending them money, Francis
proposes a drug deal involving Ecstasy which will earn the two a lot
of money. But before they are able to get the drugs, Francis gets a
heart attack and dies, Fernandez said. Thus, the two look for the
Ecstasy all over the house. In the meantime, a parade of characters -
Francis' siblings, his pusher (played by Christopher de Leon), his
girlfriend, his GRO's - come into the house and look for Francis.
What ensues is a hilarious cat-and-mouse game wherein the two friends
hide the body or make him look like he's sleeping while they search
for the drugs, Fernandez said.

Not only is this movie set in Negros Occidental, its creative staff
all come from Bacolod, Fernandez said.

Fernandez himself is an adopted son of the Bacolod arts scene having
studied in the city as well as worked in Bacolod as a theatre
director. The other Bacoleños involved in the movie are production
designer Roy Lachica, image consultant RJ Lacson, assistant directors
Jay Abello and Manny Montelibano, and the entire art department crew.

Rhea Sol Hiballes, Bacolod theatre actress, is one of the actors who
match skills with the veteran and multi-awarded actors, Fernandez
said.

"Here is rare chance for us Bacoleños to watch a hilarious and
entertaining movie set in our province as well as created by one of

Synopsis
Boy is a middle class young man in desperate need of money to save his girlfriend who is being forced to work as a prostitute under the town’s powerful Mama San. To solve his problem he decides to pawn off a carabao to his ex partner in crime and childhood friend Francis. Together with their other friend Sonny, he asks his wealthy but violent friend for help. Instead of taking his offer, Francis counters with a different deal – he consigns them 40 tablets of Ecstasy that they can sell for double the price and thereby raising the money Boy needs. They agree.

Francis invites them to smoke up to seal the deal. Francis goes into cardiac arrest and dies. The two try to revive him but eventually give up. Instead of informing the authorities or Francis’s family, they decide to hide his body until they find the 40 tablets.

What ensues is a hilarious cat-and-mouse game throughout the house and around the deeper issues of family, friendship, etc.

It is the goal of Unitel Pictures and its distribution arm Unico Entertainment to encourage and help develop a new generation of filmmakers – to bring out new ideas and methods of story telling – and thus the support for new, cutting edge films such as NASAAN SI FRANCIS?.

This dark comedy is based on the play DIIN NA SI FRANCIS? improvised by the 2003 BEING Batch of the Negros Summer Workshops. The screenplay itself is a Cinemalaya finalist.
Small investors, some of the filmmakers and some of the actors helped finance the production of this film. Unitel extended the use of their shooting equipment, post facilities and technical staff. Unico provided financing of prints, advertising and distribution to support first time filmmaker, writer/director Gabby Fernandez.

NASAAN SI FRANCIS? puts together an ensemble cast headed by Christopher de Leon in a fresh new role. It introduces Pinoy rock star Rico Blanco of Rivermaya and rock musician Karl Roy in their first acting roles. The company is completed by the engaging participation of Epy Quizon, Paolo Contis, Ricky Davao, Rio Locsin, Rita Avila, Angel Aquino, Michael de Mesa, Mark Gil, Julia Clarete and Tanya Garcia.

Nestor Torre, Inquirer columnist and movie critic, hails Christopher de Leon’s acting in this film as “a standout portrayal… delightfully creative, fresh and vital.� He says: “[Christopher] goes to town with his wonderfully loopy portrayal which lends the film a winning zest and zing.�

Gabby Fernandez has been part of the directorial tag team of Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes for many years. He has served as their associate director on countless TV and movie projects.

Cinematography is by Miguel Fabie. Produced by Michael de Castro who edited the film and Epy Quizon who stars as Francis. Line Producer is Lore Reyes. Associate Producer is Sandy Santamaria of Unitel Pictures and Tony Gloria is Executive Producer.
