MANILA, Philippines – Purefoods is willing to unload one of its stars to get a quality first round pick in the coming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual Rookie Draft.

The Tender Juicy Giants, who will be picking sixth or seventh in the draft, might give up one of their star players in exchange for a first round draft choice.

Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo told GMANews.TV that he instructed coach Ryan Gregorio to possibly trade one of its marquee players in exchange for a rookie that they can pluck out in the first round.

“We have so many good players, and it would be ideal to trade one of them in exchange for a first round pick so that we will earn two picks in the first round," said Pardo, who did not reveal who among the star players might be put on the trading block.

Several amateur standouts have joined this year’s draft, with 6-foot-9 Japeth Aguilar, son of former Northern Consolidated and Ginebra San Miguel stalwart Peter Aguilar, the most notable candidate.

Burger King, which has earned three picks in the draft, would most likely secure the services of the Western Kentucky University standout as its top overall pick in the draft. Aguilar has been added to the line up of the Jones Cup and FIBA-Asia Championship-bound Powerade-Team Pilipinas.

Other rookie standouts who are possible first round picks are Rico Maierhofer, Jervy Cruz and Fil-Am guards Chris Ross, Josh Vanlandingham and Chris Timberlake.

The Giants have yet to start their rebuilding program for next season as they are waiting for the return of Purefoods top executive Butch Alejo, who is still in Vietnam.

“Since our campaign ended early, the members of the team are now busy with their “palengke" tour, which is normally being done by the team during the off season," said Pardo. “But we also have to study the draft and plan from there."

Despite a stellar cast - led by former most valuable player James Yap, RP team standout Kerby Raymundo, Enrico Villanueva, Don Allado, Rich Alvarez, Celino Cruz, KG Canaleta, Peter June Simon, Roger Yap and Topex Robinson - the Giants failed to advance in Fiesta Cup semifinals.

Lack of venue forces PBA to set Game 5 on Monday

MANILA, Philippines - It’s a rarity for the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to hold a Monday game.

More so, in a championship match.

But the unavailability of the Araneta Coliseum and the poor ventilation at the alternative site, the Astrodome, have forced the league to schedule Game 5 of the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup Finals between Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel on a non-regular playing day.

Holding Monday games is not something new for the league, though. Just last April 20, it scheduled a twinbill at the Astrodome to kick off the 2009 All-Star Week.

However, this is the first time that the pro league has scheduled a championship game on a Monday.

“There is always a first time for everything. But there will be no substitute to the welfare of our fans," PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said.

Barrios revealed that the league considered holding the game at the Astrodome this Sunday, but during a routine check up, the maintenance staff of the arena discovered that four of the venue’s eight air conditioning blowers are down and repair couldn’t be completed in time for Game 5.

“There is a tremendous clamor for tickets for Game 5. And based on our assessment, the air conditioning system won’t hold up to the huge crowd that we are expecting," said Barrios.

“We always want our fans to watch the games as if they are in the comfort of their homes. Obviously, that’s not possible under the present situation at the Astrodome."

A wrestling extravaganza this Friday and the UAAP games on Saturday and Sunday have forced the league out of the Araneta Coliseum.

With no venue to play on, the PBA has to take a four-day break from the best-of-seven finals currently tied at 2-2 after the Beermen’s dramatic 106-104 win in Game 4 Wednesday night.

Barangay Ginebra is aiming to become the Fiesta Cup's first repeat champion since Red Bull in 2001. - GMANews.TV

Miller wants out of Alaska; Purefoods, Coca-Cola interested
    07/10/2009 | 08:39 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Willie Miller, one of the best players in pressure-packed situations, may find himself donning a new jersey in next season’s Philippine Basketball Association.

According to Miller’s manager, Danny Espiritu, the 5-11 guard from Letran wants out of Alaska.

“He’s no longer happy playing for Alaska, that’s why he wants to be traded," Espiritu told GMANews.TV. “Worse, napagbibintangan pa siya nang hindi maganda ng ibang tao. He is a two-time MVP and has brought his teams to championships."

This development came on the heels of Alaska coach Tim Cone’s statement that they will do everything at all cost to keep the services of the two-time Most Valuable Player.

“We won’t bite on the offers," said Cone, who is currently in the United States. “I’ve said that long ago that we have no plans of trading Willie, who’s our best player on the team right now."

Learning about Miller’s plan to bolt out of the Aces, two teams - Purefoods and Coca-Cola – reportedly expressed interest to negotiate with Alaska for the rights to Miller’s services.

A highly-placed source said that Alaska, which is currently in need of a big man who can help Sonny Thoss, is reportedly eyeing Enrico Villanueva and another undisclosed player for Miller.

Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo has been very vocal about getting Miller.

“Well, I cannot deny the fact that I want to get Miller. Ever since when he was still with Red Bull, I made an attempt of getting him and we still want to get him now," said Pardo. “Willie is also a buddy of Kerby Raymundo, the acknowledged leader of our team."

Coca-Cola board representative JB Baylon said Miller is on the Tigers’ wish list and his team would need somebody of his caliber.

“He’s included in the short list of players we would like to get," said Baylon. “But there’s no definite development at this time. Every player naman kasi who’s been nice to you would always say that they want to play for our team."

But Baylon said there are no negotiations between Alaska and Coca-Cola at this time.
