PINOY independent filmmaker Auraeus Solito's "Ang Pagdadalaga ni
[The Blossoming of] Maximo Oliveros" continues to bloom in the
international cinema scene. The film won on Friday the Berlin
International Film Festival's top Teddy Queer (Best Feature) Film
award.
Celebrating its 20th year, the Teddy Awards have become the biggest
of the prestigious Berlinale's events, spanning all categories. So
while "Maximo" was entered in the Kinderfilmfest (children's)
category, it was also eligible for the plum that recognizes
excellence in gay and lesbian cinema.
Solito joins a group of distinguished filmmakers, including Pedro
Almodovar, Francois Ozon, Derek Jarman and Gus Van Sant, who have
each received a Teddy. Solito's film about a gay 12-year-old (Nathan
Lopez) who befriends a cop (JR Valentin) competed with over 30 films.
Jurors cited "Maximo" for "its joyous and convincing portrayal of a
queer boy living in an environment of acceptance and tolerance."
Bronze statuettes have replaced the plush toys that the winners used
to receive. The Berlinale is the only one among the top
international film festivals that gives awards to films with gay and
lesbian themes. The festival's main prizes, the Golden and Silver
Bears, were scheduled to be given Sunday, Feb. 19 (Monday in Manila).
"Maximo" beat out early favorites like "Capote" from the United
States and "Eleven Men Out" from Iceland. From 30, the final list
was narrowed down to three. The two entries edged out by "Maximo"
were "Breakfast on Pluto" by Irish-born Neil Jordan ("Crying
Game," "Interview with the Vampire") and "Legaturi Bolnavicioase
(Lovesick)" by Romanian Tudor Giurgiu.
The Teddy for Best Feature Film comes with an endowment of 3,000
euros ($3,571) from the Teddy Foundation, with the support of
various Berlin gay and lesbian groups.
Among the jurors were festival organizers from Canada, USA, Great
Britain, South Africa and Indonesia.
On Feb. 3, "Maximo," produced by ufo Pictures' Raymond Lee and
written by Michiko Yamamoto, shared The Network for the Promotion of
Asian Cinema Award with a Japanese film, "The Lost Hum," at the
conclusion of the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
Last month, "Maximo" earned the distinction of being the first movie
from the Philippines to participate in the Sundance Film Festival's
World Cinema Competition (Dramatic Category) held last month. "Kahit
ano ang ibigay sa akin ng Lord, masaya na ako," Solito told the
Inquirer when asked in an interview in Sundance about his film's
chances at these international film competitions. With a report from
Bayani San Diego Jr.

TRIPLE TRIUMPHS.
A day after ufo pictures' "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" won
the Teddy for Best Feature Film at the Berlin International Film
Festival, more good news followed: It was also declared Best Film by
the International Jury of Kinderfilmfest and Second Best Film by the
Children's Jury.
The Teddy is for gay-theme films and Kinderfilmfest is the
Berlinale's children's category, according to Michiko Yamamoto,
scriptwriter.
Yamamoto said the Kinderfilmfest victories are twice as sweet
because "it was a festival for children." She also scripted Maryo J.
de los Reyes' "Magnifico," which topped the Kinderfilmfest in 2004.
"To think we just won in Rotterdam (tying with Japan's "The Lost
Hum" for Best Asian Film, given by the Network for the Promotion of
Asian Cinema, an association of critics)," said Yamamoto of "Maxi's"
latest score.
"I'm so happy for the ["Maxi"] team. I've lost count of the number
of times we've won. It feels great because it's ufo's first film."
Yamamoto received the Berlinale news around lunchtime in Manila on
Saturday, via a text message from producer Raymond Lee, who was in
Germany with director Auraeus Solito.
The Teddy comes with a cash prize of 3,000 euros ($3,571).
"We hope to use the cash prize to fund future projects, like `Sarong
Banggi [One Night].'"
