I can't play all of the guitar solos or riffs in my list, but during my band-playing days, these were the solos/riffs that determined whether you are a serious guitar player or just a wannabe. Most of these guitar parts were performed by the original artists without the benefit of several gadgets/distortions/etc.

    1. Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen
    2. My Sharona-The Knack
    3. Day Tripper-The Beatles
    4. Money Ain't for Nothing-Mark Knofpler
    5. Let Me Roll It-Paul McCartney and the Wings
    6. Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
    7. Love of My Life (acoustic version)-Queen
    8. Dust In the Wind - Kansas
    9. Blackbird - Beatles
    10. Scarborough Fair - Simon and Garfunkel
    11. Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel
    12. The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
    13. Theme from Top Gun

The true test of your skill as a guitarist back then was when you can replicate the electric guitar riff/solo on an acoustic - unplugged and with no gadgets whatsoever. I am kindda discouraged listening to many young guitarists who are just starting and plug themselves to several layers of gadgets. Most only know a couple of chords, but one cannot distinguish the guitar skill but can only hear the gadgets. When the MTV Unplugged series came out in the early-mid '90's, you can see hear the lack of skills many musicians had. Listen to Eric Clapton or Ron Wood (guest guitarist in Rod Stewart's performance), and compare it with the unplugged playing of Nirvana, Bryan Adams, and others and you can hear for yourself the difference in skills.

But I have learned to accept that many of today's musicians like to say that it is about the song's message rather than the way it is played that needs to be understood an/or appreciated. Nothing wrong with that, but I prefer the message to be played with more skill than to be accompanied with just plain noise.
