It is during the waking state when physical perception (sensory system) is most active. As you sleep, your body limits your sense of perception to give way for the dream state (subconscious) to take over the work of awareness in an involuntary, abstract or usually for the large part in an incoherent way. Thus, while you are alive, you're actually 24/7 "aware."
There is also another state of awareness -- which is auto (self-induced) or externally-induced like hypnosis. However, it is difficult to establish as to whether or not the person is in a waking or in an altered (delusional) state while undergoing hypnosis. The same goes for a person in a trance or meditation.
The metaphysical state of awareness is one that can only be understood by mystics or those who have achieved evolutionary enlightenment or "oneness" like the gurus and those great teachers of the past. A belief commonly shared by hindus and buddhists.
In the realm of Paranormal Psychology, the metaphysical state of awareness also spans sensitivity to or actual experience of esoteric phenomena -- bilocation, astral flight or immersion into "other dimensions."
However, I happen to be a skeptic insofar as mysticism and paranormal science are concerned.![]()
